Just got the renewal notice from my landlord and Im floored, rents going up by $200 starting next month. I knew increases were coming, but this feels insane. I dont know if I should start apartment hunting, try to negotiate, or just bite the bullet and cut back elsewhere.

Back When I was renting a house I could barely get by, usually with no money in the account on payday. The uncertainty of rent increases really weighed my mood down too.

For years I got annual $25 a month increases. Then they paused increasing during Covid. They countered that with a $55 increase the following year. The year after that they hit us with a ridiculous $255 a month increase. Since then it has been a steady 3% increase every year.

apartment hunting should start (save that for last resort). try to negotiate first. if the first 2 things fail. gotta bite the bullet and keep apartment hunting.

A $200 increase would have been a massive 10% rent increase with the last apartment I had before I bought my house. I'd try to negotiate that down.

When our house we were renting for a year decided they wanted to increase rent by 200$ we moved in with my wifes parents down the road while we bought a house to be built that took a year or so to be built.

Thats crazy. The apartments I lived in back in 1999 are only currently a little more than $200 higher than I was paying 26 years ago. They were $500 back then and $725 now. I looked recently because someone was arguing with me about market prices.

the last time was a 10$ increase (seems like company's and rent like to eat into any gains from yearly increases in social security).

rewind around 10 years ago when i lived at my last place the former landlord decided to sell and the new landlord decided to jack up the rent from 750$ to 1200$ (huge increase) didn't help at the time i had a dog and places don't rent out so easily to people like me. had to wait a few years after that for rent subsidized apartment.

back then i lived with my uncle (he was a good guy, went broke after a week into every paycheck).

My mortgage is coming up for renewal in a couple of years. I should sit down with finance manager and see what options are to make sure that my monthly payments don't explode on me. I'm paying a relatively modest $935 a month on the mortgage and just shy of $2,000 a year on property taxes. Very affordable for my situation.

Yeah, mine went up over $100 this year from it. I'm at like +$230 since I refinanced in 2020, which is fun considering my overall payment after doing so was in the $560s.

My rent is up 1k but that's because I had to go month to month until I figure out if I want to move

It's otherwise been fairly stable, and would have gone down if I went for the normal 12 month lease
