I've liked Cross ever since Mr. Show, so I'm glad to see at least someone with some fucking decency.

He is amazing. I got into him from Arrested Development and have been a huge fan ever since. My wife and I saw him live about a month ago and I was in tears, laughing. He was on stage for almost 2 hours and killed it.

As I understand it, it would be "fucked" to take the money. As in, something bad is being done somehow and it doesn't outweigh the good.

I don't see what exactly I could be hurting by taking the money. I don't believe my taking the money changes anything about the Saudis slowly taking over the world, but the money does solve most of my problems, most of the problems of people I care about, and possibly starts a charity.

Chappelle is exactly the kind of person I expect to see on that list though. That's not a big deal in itself.

Bill Burr is not. I didn't particularly have any strong feelings about him but I thought he was the kind of person who wouldn't do something like this.

Likewise, if the list was just a bunch of no-names, it also wouldn't matter.

1. It's safe for them, they're in no danger
2. It's playing to a crowd.

I can't really find fault with an up-and-coming comic who is established but not quite wealthy yet for performing at the festival. I can guarantee that a large majority of us in our careers have had to swallow our pride and apologize for shit that wasn't our fault in order to appease a shitty boss.

The ones whom I *can* find fault with?

-The wealthy ones. Kevin Hart and Dave Chappelle do not need to be performing at the Riyadh Comedy Festival to make ends meet, and in fact, performing there might actually *hurt* their careers in the long run.

-The ones whose comedy material rips on white conservatives for holding ideas such as being anti-abortion or embracing religious fundamentalism. If you're going to talk shit about uptight religious Christians in your comedy, it's absolute hypocrisy to take money from a theocratic regime that takes Christian fundamentalist attitudes and puts them on steroids.

-The ones whose lives are directly impacted by the ideas and policies put forth by the Saudi government. Jessica Kirson is a lesbian. You're going to go and perform in a country that allows for the death penalty for homosexual acts? Omid Djalili is of Iranian descent, has written about the struggle for women's rights in Iran, and attended an Iranian solidarity rally in Trafalgar Square after a woman died in the custody of Iran's religious police, detained for not wearing a hijab. You're going to perform in Saudi Arabia, a country which is even *more* repressive?

Bill Burr is not brave for roasting a city.

He was brave because in a time when comedians were itching to pander to the MAGA crowd and punch down at all the marginalized groups, he went against the current. He burned all the good will from that, as far as I'm concerned.
