Patient was in a hall bed and had just woken up. Shes a sweet, little old lady. Patient asked the nurse politely, baby, would it be possible to get some breakfast?

This is an old southern grandma. As someone who has lived in the south my entire life, baby is an incredibly common term of endearment that many grandmas would use. This nurse proceeded to berate the patient for saying baby and then rudely told her she isnt her nurse. The patient was obviously taken aback by the overly hostile. When she stood up for herself the nurse doubled down and then told other RNs the patient was being rude and disrespectful. They all proceeded to gang up on her and treat her like a criminal. They were literally considering calling security. What for? Idk.

Patient was left sobbing with no family at her bedside to stand up for her. Patient advocate came and spoke to her and also got the nurses side where she made the patient sound like the villain. I pulled him aside and said hey just fyi I saw the whole thing and shes lying to you about what happened. He told me he appreciated the honesty and asked me if I would be willing to type up an incident report which I did. This isnt the first time Ive seen this nurse rip into patients. Shes also ripped into my coworkers before. Shes awful.

Im kicking myself for not stepping in when it was actually happening, but I think I was just as stunned and taken aback as the patient. But the least I can do is advocate for her now when she has no one else on her side. I just imagine my own grandma in that situation. I could see her saying something similar and this nurse eviscerating her. It just made me furious.

Does the nurse have a right to not wanna be called baby? Absolutely, but this was not the way to handle it, especially when there was clearly nothing malicious about it. We dont yell at and bully patients.

Anyway, blogFAQS

This story broke me a little bit, all other things being equal I absolutely have a soft spot for little old grandmas, I can't help it. That seemed unnecessarily cruel

Yeah. I totally get not wanting to be called baby. Thats fine. But youve gotta pick your battles and this was not the hill to die on. The patients actual nurse (not the one I reported) just got a call from HR regarding what I assume was my report.

Shes trying to spin it that the nurse politely said, Ill check on breakfast, but can you please not call me baby?

If that was what she actually had said it would have been fine. But thats not what she said. She said, in a disgustingly rude tone, first of all, you DONT call me baby. Second, of all Im not your nurse, as if she was implying the patient is not her problem to the patients face.

She was such a sweet lady too. She needed to be admitted but refused due to how she was treated and I cant blame her. As soon as she left the bitchy RN immediately started talking shit. Im this close to telling her to shut the fuck up

It happens to the best of us, I worked at a prison for 13 years and worked with a lot of dickhead guards and there would be a lot of times I wanted to step into a situation and call them out right then but couldnt. But I would report them afterwards for sure.

Give yourself some grace, you are advocating for her now and maybe you can go have a conversation with her later?

Also fuck that awful nurse. That makes me so happy we never left my dad alone while he was dying in the hospital

What the actual fuck is wrong with that person?

I feel for that patient. No way an innocent query should have been met with...that

I just heard her say to another coworker, you can call me honey, sweetie, dear whatever. Thats fine. But I draw the line at baby.

And Im just like really? You draw the line at a little old lady calling you baby? Really? This is the hill youre gonna die on? For fucks sake I got called baby by a patient earlier today when I got her some water. She said god bless you. Thank you baby. Was I offended? No! Why would I be?

Why are you a nurse when you so clearly hate people?

Yeah don't let yourself become what Yamcha and Krillin did. You need the Future Trunks mentality, to act on what's right without hesitation.

Although Future Trunks was screwing up when he was contemplating not getting in the way of Vegeta's pride.

Oh damn I cant imagine the shit that goes on in prison. Good on you for reporting it.

I just hate that this shit goes on here. Theres no place for that behavior in healthcare. The patient is gone now and this nurse is still ranting about it making herself a victim. Fucking give me a break. I have literally never had a single pleasant interaction with this woman

In one of the visits we made one was a bit terse with my friend who was never a problem. Everybody likes her. I can say that maybe the nurse was having a bad day. Why? A later visit she was calm and not angry. Good nurse too.

I hope she stubs her toe, drops her lunch, hits her head, and her car battery dies, all in the same day

I dont think it was just a bad day. Shes like this all the time. Shes just a mean, miserable person who really has no business interacting with patients who are vulnerable. Shes a bully

My coworker just told me that a couple of weeks ago she was cleaning a fridge as part of a floor check and this nurse came up unprovoked and started yelling at her and calling her an idiot because said nurse is allergic to cleaning products. Yeah sure. Maam you work in a hospital you are literally surrounded by cleaning products. My coworker initially kept it to herself but after telling me we relayed it to our boss and she said to submit another incident report. Two reports in one day is certainly gonna set off red flags

She really needs to learn to stop running her mouth

good. fuck shit nurses. i've seen crap like that before, "put the 'problem patient' at the end of the hall and ignore the calls" was a common tactic in a previous hospital i worked in.

Yeah I typically dont like to punish people or go after their jobs, but this chick is out of control. When we have patients denying treatment that they need because their nurse is harassing them, thats a HUGE problem. Im trying to think of it like: Im not getting her fired. Shes getting herself fired. Im just the messenger

If it was a creepy guy calling her baby and hitting on her I would be on her side. Unfortunately that shit does happen, but thats not what this was and she fucking knows it. She was just looking for a fight and she found one

A nurse should know better than this, and anyone working in humanities know that some people say weird stuff and you need to be above it. Besides, it was a grandma, what was she gonna do?

*That* is where this nurse draws the line? Where an old grandma is being nice to you in her own way that is clearly not intended to be harmful or belittling? I'd usually draw the line more at stuff that's actually, you know, vile.

Good on you though.
