I don't think the equivalence is there. It's not "resorting to the same tactics," no matter how the right wants to paint it. It's complicated (and probably a bit convoluted), but here's my understanding of why it's probably not the equivalence or justification you're suggesting the right has claim to. First off, and to be clear, I don't believe that political assassination is in any way a valid form of resistance. I can also see, historically, that passive resistance and working within systems eventually fails when the system is monopolized by one ideological force. You will end up with two groups at the end of the day it looks like: those who attempt to navigate the system that's been corrupted, leaving resistance to nothing more than, say, strongly worded letters, and then you'll have others who will feel so disenfranchised and desperate that, in their disenfranchised and desperate minds, they're not "resorting to the same tactics," but operating on a, "means of last resort." It's terrifying that it escalates like that, because it just ends in so much blood. But we've seen it time and again. France is probably the easiest example to point to, where they eventually felt there was no other recourse, and it turned into one of the darkest times in their history, getting a lot worse before it got better. And, somehow, a couple hundred years removed from that, we're repeating it. And that should worry us all. But among all that worry, can we really say that acts like this "prove them right" when the place that awful acts like this come from is so different? Nothing justifies or excuses the act of violence like what happened, but understanding the root cause gives us the ability to see that it's not one side being proven right and justifying their attitudes, but that the other side might not see they were left with any options at all.
