The second two are both kinda reboots so I'm guessing the names are supposed to communicate that those are games that story-wise are easy for people new to the series to jump into without having to already know a bunch of MK lore.

Also, MK9 is actually the 8th game in the core series. They made MK vs DCU, an unnumbered, spin off, crossover title that isn't canon or in continuity with anything. And they decided, "yeah that counts as MK8"
