I thought this was kinda interesting. Kinda shows how large the boost era Sonic levels were if he can cross Hyrule in 5 minutes. And the guy playing doesnt even do a straight shot. He fucks around a bit

Man, watching that just made me think I'd probably *love* that open-world Sonic game. Dashing around a big, open map at Sonic (heh) speeds is *exactly* what I would want out of a 3D Sonic game~

It's definitely part of what kept me playing is just mindlessly dashing around like that. Couple that with each map actually having a bunch of *things* to do or collect without even progressing the story.

Though I am more of a fan of a Sonic experience where you have a clear start and end goal. Maybe in the next one if they made each linear zone more open to allow for so many more ways to reach the end. Kinda like what Shadow Gens did but less floating platform level-design.

I have been saying this for ages. With Sonic's speed, a huge sandbox just makes sense. One of the only franchises I actually want a big open world for. Absolutely still have courses, but giving you an open world to explore and run around in at Sonic's speed would be phenomenal. It would be the only open-world game where I wouldn't use fast travel because why bother unless it's literally at the opposite end of the map?
I envision a modernized control scheme where holding down the right trigger is what enables the gotta go fast. So if you don't hold it, you can do precision platforming and move around at a normal, controlled speed. Hold the trigger down at varying levels to accelerate beyond the normal walk/jog. And click the left stick in for boost. I personally do not like boost but I recognize that it's probably not going anywhere.
And kind of like Marvel's Spider-Man, Sonic would handle some of the traversal stuff for the player so you're not constantly getting stopped by small obstacles, trees, etc. Hit a wall, Sonic runs up it, hit a bump or a rock or a vehicle, Sonic vaults over. Give players an option to toggle this feature on, off or only off in courses.

That was actually kind of awkward to watch in a lot of ways. Even as someone who 100%'d BotW and knows the map like the back of my hand, the sense of scale and persepective felt waaaayyy different from how you normally experience it, kinda disorientating.

To be fair the Spindash that was added later in the game was REALLY overtuned. You absolutely can fly over the map like that with it.

I feel something like Odyssey/Frontiers works better, having multiple but dense playgrounds with their own obstacle courses plus some linear levels in sub-areas....thoooooough the next one better be way less jank than Frontiers. Shadow Gens also had a pretty good idea even if it was more of a hub for the main levels

Wide appeal with character designs is my bet. That's part of why the franchise's popularity kicked off, as the "cool" alternative to Mario.

I know for me character design means a lot. The Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 era is where I truly got into Sonic and I miss how stylish the character designs were for the franchise back then.

tbh pretty surprised to hear that before the movies with the franchise being almost dead at that point, but guess the boom show was fun enough. Movies and Frontiers brought back a TON of goodwill for the series
