Never actually played it. My first DMC game was 4, and I never actually went back to play the old ones yet.

I didn't hate it when I played it, but it was nothing special. Think people just overhate it because it changed too much from DMC1 with a few step downs like guns being OP (can easily avoided by not abusing them....)

Combat is too floaty and soft, both for movement and attacking. Everything feels insubstantial.

I enjoyed it, though it left me wanting compared to 1.

I agree that game balance is important, and I tend to use all the options available to me. Imbalance is a flaw. However, if an option gets to the point of making you think a game is the worst thing ever, it starts falling on you for continuously picking that option.

DMC2 is not hard enough for you to have to abuse the guns to clear content. I didn't unbind the gun or anything when I played but I didn't just stand there spamming guns because that shit is boring. No one is forcing you to do that.

Also a lot of bosses in dmc hide out of melee reach and have to be fought with gun spam.

• Easiest game in the series
• Youre basically stuck with 1 melee weapon as all of them are just different variations of the main sword with slightly different stats. Which leads to the game feeling very repetitive, especially with how it feels like it drags on for too long.
• Goes hand in hand with point 2, but swords feel weak to use while the guns feel way too strong. Which adds to the repetitiveness when you get pushed into using the guns more because of how much stronger they are than the swords. And because of all of that, the pace of the gameplay feels very slow compared to the other games in the series.
• Dont remember too much about all the bosses, but I remember not enjoying any of them. Especially because theres some where, even had the swords felt on par with the guns, theyre torture to try to fight with them.
• Dante has the personality of a wooden board in 2. Probably the most bland hes ever been, with only Donte from DmC being arguably worse (depends on if what you find worse between a bland character or someone that feels like theyre trying way too hard to be edgy).
• Awful story. DMC has never been known for its story, but most of the games at least have an enjoyable one. DMC2 sticks out with how bad and bland its story is though. Id even argue DmC had a better story. And the bad voice acting doesnt help either (although the mustached villain has that so bad its good voice acting at times).

It did have some good things like the character designs and Sin Devil Trigger (which was an even stronger DT you could get from activating it at low health), but all the flaws really overshadows the good aspects it has.

Like it commits the primary sin of just not being fun, let alone the jank on top.

DMC1 is also jank but makes up for it with heart and "we don't know what we're doing but we're doing it anyway" energy. 2 does nothing to build on this and takes steps back in many ways

It is a very different beast than DmC, which is a good game but an awful *DMC* game (with bad writing)

It's horrible. A fundamentally broken game. You can pound on the semifinal boss in a safe spot among everything else.

Nothing from DMC2 deserves a second chance.

Also, while the lockon in DMC2 is indeed awful, it's not like it wasn't also problematic in the first game. Particularly in the Nightmare fights.
