pictures/videos of especially high calorie meals? a large non diet soda is gonna be like 300-500 (maybe more sometimes) calories. and people who are particularly overweight can still eat a lot while losing weight

so like, a diet soda is actually helping. plus i never see the mocked sentiment in earnest anyway. like pretty much never

Just people being assholes because overweight people have always been shamed. Hell for that matter Id have thin friends who would eat fast food and get made fun of for diet drinks when they were drinking them simply because they liked them or were avoiding sugar. People act like they are ignorant though when pairing diet drinks with heavy calorie meals as if they were completely clueless about nutrition.

But yeah on the Internet everyone has to get a jab in to feel superior or like they know more. Its like its always amused me when people would eat salads and people always comment on how many calories and fat is in salad dressing and its like some of us just genuinely like a nice salad from time to time because its yummy or I used to eat a lot of them in the summer because I didnt like eating heavy when it was hot. I wasnt doing it for calorie restriction so yeah I was piling on fatty salad dressing because its tasty.

Anything to do with food or working out people nitpick. Take any weightlifting video and all the experts come out bitching about their form. We know everything gets torn down on the Internet. Someone can donate a billion dollars for kids cancer and people whine they didnt give enough or that its just a tax write off or some other snide remark. Everything needs to be torn down online.

My favorite instance of this is Gabriel Iglesias saying that people often asked him why he drank diet soda, and he said it was so he could eat regular cake.

That's because they are. Studies have shown that diet soda activates the part of your body that's designed to process sugar if you are obese or a woman, so when it doesn't actually get it your body causes you to crave more sugar. People think they're saving calories by switching to diet but then they get a craving 2 hours later for a piece of cake and end up consuming more overall because of signals they activated with their fake soda. If someone happens to prefer the taste of artificial sweetener, that's one thing, but anybody having a diet soda because they think it's some sort of smart caloric balance is just straight up ignorant of how nutrition works.

https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2021/10/07/1044010141/diet-soda-may-prompt-food-cravings-especially-in-women-and-people-with-obesity
A study published recently in JAMA Network Open adds to the evidence that drinks made with sucralose may stimulate the appetite, at least among some people, and the study gives some clues as to why.

Both groups also had a reduction in the hormone that inhibits appetite, and they ate more food after they consumed drinks with sucralose, compared with after regular sugar-sweetened drinks. In contrast, the study found males and people of healthy weight did not have an increase in either brain reward activity or hunger response, suggesting they're not affected in the same way.

To examine the relationship between diet soda (DS) intake (DSI) and long-term waist circumference (WC) change (WC) in the biethnic San Antonio Longitudinal Study of Aging (SALSA)

In a striking dose-response relationship, increasing DSI was associated with escalating abdominal obesity, a potential pathway for cardiometabolic risk in this aging population.

Right. People are such bitches about diet/zero sugar soda and theres a hundred reasons that people switch. My son is on the spectrum and he enjoys having a zero sugar Mountain Dew with dinner. I cant much tell the difference in flavor, but the regular does seem a bit sweeter but he swears the regular is way too sweet and I dont even want soda in the house so Id rather have him save the calories.

You've created a fake binary where the fat person can't choose something other than soda and both options are unhealthy. Winning is picking something other than soda.

What you're doing is the equivalent of saying that it's unfair chain smokers get criticized regardless of whether they choose a filtered or unfiltered brand. You're not even allowing for the possibility of not smoking into the argument.

Agree to disagree. While I don't think diet drinks are gross tasting, they are not my preferred flavor of soda in general.

Like I wouldn't turn diet soda down if someone offered it to me and it's all they had, but i wouldn't go out of my way to choose it.

Plus for some, and this is true for my brother, he doesn't like diet sodas because they leave a weird aftertaste after drinking them and he doesn't like that so he'd rather not.

Youre just twisting the narrative to make it fit this one specific category in thinking someone drinking diet is doing it for calorie restriction so you can claim ignorance because they are obese and eat more food later. No part of my post was about calorie restriction and in fact in the context of my post I clearly mentioned NOT doing stuff for calorie restriction but yet that is what you want to focus on.

I specifically said I know people who are thin and legitimately like the taste or are simply avoiding the sugar. Yet you want to focus on obese people who you think are drinking it for calorie reduction. And despite all the gamefaqs nutrition experts that are always shitting on diet soda every doctor I have ever talked to about it from a diabetic standpoint will point out that those diet sodas dont raise blood sugar like normal sodas and that for those individuals it is a good option based on current information.

So sure, go on about calorie restriction and why they are overweight and in fact ignorant. You clearly were just looking for a reason to turn this into a soapbox moment. I flat out said my thin friends get made fun of for drinking diet because they like the taste and people act like they are ignorant. And you jumped on the chance to make it about obese people and start posting links. Like I see a lot of weird responses on CE but you really wanted to shoehorn that one in there.

People can drink whatever the hell they want. I'm not advocating for going up to random people and making fun of them for what they're drinking. I'm just not going to tolerate people who propagate ignorance around nutrition to people who desperately need that knowledge and then defend their terrible choices using false binaries that try to frame it as if no matter what they choose they'll still get made fun of.

People do get made fun of for being fat and dieting and exercising. Have you even been fat and dieted and exercised? I lost 100 pounds over the course of a year or so and heard it all from my family especially.

And I understand not tolerating ignorance of nutrition, (which is a weird hill to die on, are you a nutritionist or something?), but youre combining the two issues and they dont go together at all.

it's true but i don't fall for the trap. then again i'm a stickler to the limit of what i can/cant eat per day despite drinking a can of zero sugar soda regularly.

except for a few cheat and dessert days per week (last one was ice cream sandwich) 250 calories.

You've created a fake binary where the fat person can't choose something other than soda and both options are unhealthy. Winning is picking something other than soda

the only option to "win" with would be just water. everything else would still be just as bad as soda, fruit juices in particular are no more healthy than a mountain dew

take orange juice for example. the recommended serving size is 8 ounces, which no one follows because no one is going to drink 8 ounces of orange juice and go "yep that was enough". so let's just match a can by going with 12 ounces

that would be around 180 calories, 40g carbs, 36g sugar.
a 12 ounce can of mountain dew has 170 calories, 46g carbs, 46g sugar.

not too dissimilar, obviously the can is worse

what about grape juice? 240 calories, 60g carbs, 57g sugar.

apple? 180, 41, 39.

water is great, love it. there's nothing better than ice cold water, but it's not easy for most people to just drink something that has a flavor dictated by the conditions of metal or plastic pipes all the time.

Okay, but who said it has to be all or nothing? When I was calorie counting, having a coke zero with one meal per day was a nice way to get my soda craving without adding unnecessary calories to my daily intake. I still hit a calorie deficit every day and I didn't crave cake or other desserts later.

This joke is ancient. It's presented for the irony. Like a guy a winds up a giant punch and then just taps the opponent on the forehead or something. You expect a triple whatever milkshake but they order the option that they presumably would only choose for health conscious reasons.

It's not that it's strictly worse than the alternatives. It's just that it defies your expectation. Except that the joke has been done to death over many decades.
