Roshi was more like strength training and pushing their bodies to their current limits

I think gohan taught goku more like martial arts techniques and krillin was a monk? And learn from there iirc

but besides the kamehameha, roshi just strengthened their bodies

Yeah he's shitty with women and he takes his own martial arts training for granted cause he's been the world's best for decades but he's amazing at imparting those principles onto others even though he himself no longer lives them. You'll notice that the majority of his training for Goku and krillin was forcing them to wake up early in the morning and just do chores while wearing heavier and heavier weighted turtle shells. Waking up early, performing routine tasks, all the while pushing your physical limits is about as disciplined as most can get.

It's also worth noting that Roshi is largely responsible for changing Krillin from being a piece of shit asshole into a fine upstanding responsible man who could land and appreciate a strong woman like #18.

Yeah his friendship with Goku helped but Roshi's influence cannot be ignored as he didn't raise those boys to act the same as he himself acts.

Yet Goku immediately did everything (barring the strength bit) and thus never learned discipline from Roshi and Krillin immediately cheated until he figured out everything from Goku.

No matter how you shake it neither of them learned jack crap from Roshi. While that wouldn't make him a bad teacher inherently, the fact that he clearly was a crap teacher on top of neither student learning anything from him tales precedence.

he didn't really teach them the kamehameha anyway, Goku learned it before the training and Krillin learned it on his own. But yeah the training was moreso the basics and discipline, more than straight up martial arts forms or techniques

Yeah exactly. It's like personally Roshi is lazy, undisciplined, and a pervert, but those aren't qualities he imparts into his students. Roshi doesn't care anymore cause he doesn't have to but he trains his students to give a shit and be disciplined. And considering who his students are I think that shows he's a pretty good teacher.

Roshi didnt really even teach the Kamehameha to anyone. He uses it once and Goku just learns it himself on the fly. Kuririn and Yamcha seem to learn it on their own as well.

As for Kuririn becoming a mode citizen, Id attribute that more to Gokus influence than anything. Goku brings out the better side of people throughout DB & DBZ.

As some have noted, Roshis teaching were more about discipline and his philosophy on lifestyle (move well, study well, play well, eat well, rest well). And it clearly had an effect on his students, they all revere him.

And also, Goku and Krillin were both already martial arts masters. Goku had spent all of his life up until Gohan died learning from him and he was a master that trained with Roshi. Krillin joined with Roshi cause he had already learned all he could from his shoulin school and he took up with Roshi so he could gain even more experience. That's why he has those dots. So yeah Roshi skimped on the martial arts training cause his students didn't need it. Both Goku and Krillin were already moving faster than Olympians and were shrugging off small arms fire prior to their hermit training, so Roshi taught them how to move better cause they didn't have that training from Roshi.

One thing that definitely annoys me though is Roshi never teaching Krillin the only known Human transformation, Max Power.

If Toriyama wanted to he easily could have had Krillin keep up with the Saiyans with Max Power and maybe combining it with Kaioken.

you say this, but roshi expressly fought in the tournaments under an alias to teach his students that there's always someone stronger than them, so they should always be training.

This is DBZ wiki/databook stuff. Max Power was literally just Roshi using his full power, but dbz fans love to turn everything into some kind of mode or technique or forma de estoesto

You're literally going to "Umm actually" ascended super saiyan because the wiki says it's not actually a transformation even though it's definitely treated as one and is distinctly different from base Super Saiyan.

Has a distinctly different look, increases stats, does everything a transformation does.

It's just pumping up muscles without the chi to match, so no it's not really a transformation since it's implied anyone can do it but they just don't cause none of its benefits are worth it's drawbacks.

In fairness, they usually refer to it as transcending Super Saiyan. When they emerge from the RoSaT, Trunks says his father broke the Super Saiyan barrier. When Goku does it, he calls it a form. The only mention of the word transform is when Vegeta first does it vs Cell, as Trunks says hes going to transform into it.

That was just a one off, though - they use different language for the most part. Hell, Freeza basically does it, and he just calls it 100% of his full power.

I don't know that the wiki says it's not actually a transformation, because I don't look at the wiki. Did you just consult the wiki for this, or did you happen to know off-hand?

Powering up and making your muscles bigger is something anyone in the series can do. It's not something learned, nor a technique. it's just something muscles can do in this series. What, do you think Freeza saying "ok I'm going to use all my power", and then having his muscles get bigger, is a technique?
