I was 6 years old at the time, so that entire set of episodes was probably the most hype shit I'd ever seen.

I was in college. So I was watching the fight each day.
Damn it was dragging on forever.

so because of classes I was all upset because I missed 4 days when it seemed at its climax and I thought I missed the end and all. Then when i watched the next episode after missing many, nothing changed. I pretty much missed nothing.
shit still went on many more episodes after

When I caught up on DBZ, Goku vs Recoome was the most recent episode. I watched that so many times. Shame the show slowed down so much after that.

Ditto. Life was about DBZ at that age. All the martial arts and strength training and frosted tips? You better believe it.

I saw it on YTV because Canada. Don't remember if I saw it when it first aired or not though. 1999 would have been the end of grade 6 and the start of grade 7...so maybe? I was definitely watching DBZ in Junior High (grades 7-9), but it's hard to separate it out anymore specifically in my mind.

Yes, and it was super hype at the time seeing Goku go super saiyan. But then it came on again, and again, and again. It felt like the DBZ reruns lasted forever before they finally started airing the android saga.

The summer filler episodes stick out in my mind as being the longest cycle while waiting for new content. The killer riff for the outro is still ruined for me.

No. I was super late to DBZ admittedly. Didn't know anything about it until early 2000's when I was dating a woman who had a son who was into it. Got turned onto it roughly 2003. Then started watching it regularly on Toonami and watched the whole series and then the original Dragonball.

So it wasn't in 1999. 2003 for me. That was such a good time for me. Young and healthy in my late 20's and cartoons were awesome in that time frame of early Adult Swim and then stuff like this.

Yeah, Buu Saga started the day before 9/11. I vividly remember thinking they were going to delay the rest of them over it.

Yes. I rarely missed a broadcast of toonami in general let alone missing a episode of dragon ball z. I was 16 in 1999.

In those days I pretty much lived toonami/midnight run/rising sun, MTV, adult swim (when it started up in 2001), and WWF attitude era.

Same. But it wasn't just in a single year. Because of translation issues with Ocean Dub/Funimation Dub and Japan, that one fight didn't last 18 episodes like it was supposed to. It lasted 4 years. They'd get Goku to transform to SSJ1, and the next episode would be episode 1 again because the next episode wasn't dubbed yet.

I think when Frieza was airing on satellite/cable I was already buying fandubs of the Cell saga on VHS.

Nothing like those mall fansub VHSes. I remember seeing the trunks grade 3 SSJ vs perfect cell episode on one of these mall VHSes but had no idea who the fuck either of the two was when it comes to the dbz story itself. Regardless my brother and I (both crazy hooked on DBZ. This is what I really loved about how popular DBZ was in north america.......this show brought families together watching it and all kinds of people in general together just excitedly talking about the last episode).

My brother managed to rent dragon ball GT final bout (the original print version) sometime during the vegeta, gohan and krillin vs form 2 frieza airing on toonami. Absolutely blew our minds seeing a big version of gohan, majin boo? Great ape baby what? and what in the christ is this SSJ 4 shit? (We weren't saying that in a negative way, if anything SSJ4 is our favorite SSJ form lol. We was saying that in a mind blown kind of way).

In our current high-speed internet era we will most likely never go back to those crazy days where a show that while a gigantic success in it's home country and a success in a few countries that managed to have access to it (It was interesting/cool to find out that the french was always about that dragon ball life and so they had the game releases on the SNES/PS1 etc. released over there) goes relatively unknown everywhere else. When other countries do get access and if this show is manages to blow up in these places too years later then its like what, 8 years or so worth of spoilers that is out and about across different products.

Yeah. That was the only window of time I was ever into Dragonball; I watched most of the Vegeta + Nappa saga prior to that, and it wasn't as good imo. Even at the time I was constantly like 'ugh, get on with it already,' but the Frieza saga had enough cool moments that kept me hooked: Vegeta straight-up icing that little frog time-stopper, Racoome getting bodied, and Frieza getting sawed in half made it worth the time investment.

October 1999, yeah I watched the Frieza fight it first on Toonami.

I had been watching DBZ way before Toonami as well on local syndication television. My first anime titles were Maya The Bee (on Nick Jr), Samurai Pizza Cats, Ronin Warriors, DBZ and Sailor Moon in the early-mid 90s.
