patriotism
/ptrtiz()m/

noun: patriotism
the quality of being patriotic; devotion to and vigorous support for one's country.

Were your parents big on being patriotic/showing outward support for the country you live(d) in and trying to instill those values of devotion to the country in you?

I don't remember it being discussed much, tbh. I think we had one of those support the troops ribbons that everybody had in the 2000s in America, but we definitely weren't outwardly patriotic.

Bit ironic, now, considering I've been in the Army for over a decade, solely out of a sense of patriotic duty.

nah.

my parents were originally from Rwanda, and they saw how the government could hurt its people from a young age, and one of them even had a post-grad in US history.

anyway, they taught us to have a natural distrust of any government we might live under (obviously some are better than others).

Not really. They generally said favorable things about the US in conversation and my dad works for the DoD, but we didn't put up flags or really show any outward support like that.

Not over the top, but we love our country.

my mom was a Democrat but hated politics, and my dad was a republican but didnt make a big deal out of it. They never talked about it

but we certainly loved our country and troops. And we always celebrated the 3rd and 4th with fireworks and bonfires on our beaches

Not really. We had some tiny American flags around when I was growing up. We stopped flying them though. Its embarrassing to be an American.

We were taught never to confuse a country with its government. Love the former, but always be critical of the latter. The fact that we overthrew 2 of our presidents might have something to do with why we make a distinction.

No, not at all.

Parents can't stand nationalism any more than I can.

My parents for the longest time had this bizarre feeling of nationalism in a country that they both fled from which made zero sense to me.

Nope.

With the most united states patriotic day of the year july 4th that is more about enjoying the day off work and having an excuse to eat grilled food since hotdogs, steaks, ground beef, hot dog buns, potato chips etc. usually has a small sale going on. Never a single firework bought with any of our money.

I think I had some uncles and aunts that would buy a few fireworks to set'em off on july 4th. Just not my household in particular.
