The original God of War trilogy. The set pieces were cool, but the gameplay felt awful. There was no sense of weight to your attacks. Either they were fodder you blew away or they just had super armor the whole time.

Shadow of the Colossus. And I platinumed it.

Parts were ok, but I thought the game was massively disappointing. That said, I understand why people woulda loved it when it came out.

For the former I was halfway through when I came to that conclusion and brute forced what was left with an exploit. For the latter I was way further in so I just bum rushed what was left.

Fire Emblem is possibly my favorite series.

Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia was absolute garbage.

As it happens, as of a few days ago Ive finally gotten around to Fire Emblem Engage, and while I havent really formed my opinion yet, I have a feeling that it wont end up being especially high either.

I didnt like Fire Emblem Warriors at all either, but that one is more like a different game altogether that just has a Fire Emblem paint job. The gameplay in Warriors was not my cup of tea at all.

Mass Effect Andromeda. I adored the trilogy, having spent thousands of hours replaying those games over and over, but Andromeda was just fucking lame as hell, an enormous disappointment.

It's a good question, and for a long time I didn't know the answer myself. But I think I've finally figured it out.

Because fun is only one reason I play video games. The more compelling reason is that they simulate productivity, in a context designed to encourage success.

For example, yesterday I put in a nine hour shift at work and the one thing I got done was figuring out the problem I was working on is worse that I thought it was.

Then, in an hour-and-a-half Yakuza session, I leveled up once, I upgraded my hammer and kali skills five times total, I learned four new abilities, I tried eight new beverages and eleven new dishes, I finally got that beer crate revelation, I defeated the spear guy and got invited to the tournament, and I got halfway through teaching an NPC how to get a girlfriend. I got shit done.

This is why I'll power through a game I don't really even like. The regular task completion schedule keeps me moving forward. It's also why trendy indie games that hate you for playing them and mock you for losing a lot are not my thing. I don't want to spend a week trying to fight one boss. I want to get shit done. If I wanted one task that takes weeks to do, I'd go work on something in the real world.

Devil May Cry 2, such a disappointment.

Never went back to the series, that game broke my heart.
