As in you are smashing away at an enemy but their health barely moves cause you need to stagger them first lmao.

FF16 be like you can't hurt them but YOU better dodge or uhoh half your bar

Don't like them in RPG battle systems (Final Fantasy)
Like them in Souls-style games but that's a different kind of stagger than you're talking about

One of the worst mechanics introduced in modern Final Fantasy games. Just let me do regular damage, I hate having to build up a meter that then allows me to do decent amounts of damage for a short period.

Took me a sec to realize what you meant by stagger, but I completely agree. I hate systems like that.

It can be good in promoting strategic and aggressive combat as opposed to more cheesy hit and run tactics. But when its the only way to deal damage and withholds the satisfying feedback to the player outside stagger, it can be annoying.

They only work in fighting games IMO.
outside of it, like say Armored Core 6 then it's just a matter of whoever can maintain consistent gunfire = win

Overstaying its welcome in FF, though I understand theyre used as a way to balance damage to HP and make players look for strategies instead of just attacking.

It was awesome in FF13. Spend 2 minutes staggering the enemy, switch jobs, maybe hit them twice before the stagger wears off, switch jobs again and repeat.

The ball is round, the game lasts 90 minutes. That's fact.
Everything else, is theory.

it's especially bad in armored core because you can combo to prolong it

I think stagger in general is fine, but it needs to be rare and only last no longer than a second. or at least require skillful play to trigger, not just mashing buttons

Depends how they're implemented.

Good examples:
  • Divinity: OS2 - you have to strip armour before you can damage enemies. Adds a lot of strategy in the game
  • Xenoblade Chronicles - you have to approach battles in a kind of sequence in order to win battles, quite fun
  • Action games without stagger mechanics feel wrong. Like you're just hitting away until something dies. It's good to get that visceral feedback.
