I've tried Discord a few times and can't do it. I just don't like it.

I much prefer message boards where nothing moves or changes until I want it to.

If you're on multiple servers, it is just impractical and basically impossible to keep track of which one that alerts sound came from.

You get the hang of it eventually. Similar to chat rooms back in the day.

It just feels like 90s chat rooms. But it can get overwhelming if you follow too many.

The only Discord I'm active in is one with a group of my college friends. There are only about a dozen of us there, which keeps it manageable.

anyways the answer is just that you be in smaller channels that are less active and you don't try to read the entire backlog. live in the moment, pop in, talk, pop out, whatever

I was going to say this. These things have existed in many different forms since the 90s (and probably much earlier as well). I don't often use them but every time I do I feel pretty comfortable with it. I think you just have to put out of your mind that you will be able to see everything. There is just some stuff you will miss.

Yeah, I'm on multiple servers and it's a ton to keep up with. I just stopped trying. I just chat when I'm on discord and don't bother trying to keep up with past stuff, as kirbymuncher said.

LOL, so when I first started getting into Discord, I would keep my desktop computer powered on all the time. That Discord beep was happening so often that I had actually tuned it out. I was on a conference call at work for training and the presenter kept asking people to mute because he was hearing the beep through my microphone. I had no idea the beep was even happening any more. One of my coworkers had to tell me that the beep was coming from my side.

also the notification sound can be toggled around. There's notify on all messages (near-unusable unless maybe you're an important person on a small server), notify only when specifically pinged (what I think most people do), and no notifications at all.

the only kinda annoying thing is that it's a per-server setting so if the server has bad defaults you need to go fix it every time

I usually only read whats right on the newest bit or shitpost

Yeah you aren't suppose to stay up to date on every server you're part of. Just jump into a conversation of interest and chat. People are making it more overwhelming than it needs to be. I only hang around one or two very small servers and the larger CE one even though Im joined to ~15 servers.

As someone that used to have multiple channels open in IRC back in the day, Discord doesn't bother me that much.

You do eventually get used to the speed. But you absolutely can't treat it like a message board. For a large server, you have to accept that you're not going to be a part of every conversation. If you come back to 500+ messages since the last time you were on, just forget the old stuff and jump into the current conversation.

GameCube:1 in the yahoo chat room was 100% a community I belonged to. Even if it was pop in pop out. People had serious relationships. I know at least half a dozen of em got married. Like. Come on.
