This was not just my first RPGs but 1 of the first (along with dragon warrior) it felt like a new genre and new world to get hooked into. Compared to so many other games they felt like like there were so many knobs to fiddle with, along with the permanent progress in the world and with all your party members. However, I feel like i cant play rpgs any more. I just don't have the time to plod through dungeons and do any more grinding. When I was a kid I thought grinding for gear and exp and gold was the height of gaming. So much tho I thought all games should have leveling and grinding. Now. I'm the opposite. I think grinding monsters for exp is the biggest waste of time design possible. (As seen in gacha and almost every app game) I consider leveling/grinding a negative feature now. A time sink, and a money sink. I have very fond memories of 8-Bit Theater, which heavily pulled from the original Final Fantasy for inspiration, but that's about it. Then again, I was also like 3 when I first played it, and it was a bit beyond my understanding at the time. Little to none. Been gameing since I was 5 and quickly gravitated towards RPGs, but I narrowly missed the NES era and didn't touch such games until somewhere in my teens via emulation. A lot. Ive beaten the game several dozens of times, including with a solo white mage (protip: dont do it). It was the first Final Fantasy that I ever played because my uncle owned it, albeit I had no idea what to do other than wonder around and get into battles. Several years later when I was in high school is when I played it to beat it. And Ive gone back to replay it many times. Love the replayability due to the various party combinations. And while the game is clearly much more polished on the more recent releases, the NES game just hits that nostalgia chord for me. Also, even though I know exactly what Im doing at all times these days, the Marsh Cave, Astos, and the Ice Cavern still make me anxious due to the troubles that they gave me on my initial playthrough. --- Live action Hungry Hungry Hippos though, now that was a sport. ~Aeon Azuran ... While I did love the series throughout the 90's and definitely prefer later games much more like 7 and 10 I have a lot of nostalgia for it because of the time period of my life, more so than the game itself specifically. It was the summer right before I started high school in 1990. Gaming was very much still pretty niche though NES was starting to change that. It was coming out of "nerd" culture and becoming more widespread at the time. Though my friends house that I would go over to (Josh) and my other friend (Jason) were in fact very nerdy and kind of social outcasts but I was one of those people that I played sports and was friends with jocks and cheerleaders but I spent most of my time with nerds and kind of the burnout/music junkie guys. I pretty much got along with everyone. Anyway I spent almost that whole summer over at Josh's hanging out playing. We were literally basement dwellers as he had his whole gaming setup down there with all his fishtanks. I have very fond memories of that friendship with him and Jason and our times gaming together. I ended up moving and changing schools a semester later and we drifted apart but it is a time I will always remember as we were great friends in junior high. His parents were really nice to me because Josh's only friends were Jason and me so they were very nice to us. His parents were tech geeks then too and they had super high end PC's. For being the late 80's they each had a personal PC and there was a "family PC" for gaming that us kids were able to use. But Josh and his brother Andy both had personal PC's in their room, his parents each had a PC and they had a family PC. They had 5 high end PC's for a family of 4, in the 80's. That was kind of unheard of. I barely even knew anyone else with a computer except for a few of the nerdy gamer PC guys that had a Commodore 64. Anyway this is more memories that no one cares about but I felt like sharing. I'm very nostalgic, mostly for the time frame and all the stuff that came along with playing that game in the summer of 1990. --- PSN ID: sled_dogs76 60" Pioneer Kuro Elite PRO151FD, Yamaha RX-V3900 A/V Receiver, Oppo DV983-H player.
