So FF is ineligible, for example, because it's an anthology sort of deal.

Or I guess it doesn't have to be inegible completely; like we could count 13, 13-2 and Lightning Returns as a 3-installment series, if that makes any sense.

I can name a few that are long, not so sure about longest though.

Ultima for instance went for 9 main installments and several dubiously canon side stories.

Does Space Invaders count?

What about Resident Evil? It's had remasters but they've more or less kept the same continuity?

Actually Metal Gear has kept the same continuity since 1987 despite many retcons.

That's 38 years with a shit ton of games.

...the warhammer franchise, probably?

not much else comes to mind given game series tend to either flame out or Do Something Different after like 2 games

there's been an uptick in "we're going to do a shared universe super franchise project!" recently but they all forgot you need to have the first game do well to actually accomplish that

Do we count each version of Pokemon as separate games? Because that would be a contender.

Also Sonic thanks to the recent official timeline.

And there is of course Zelda.

It's...maybe 10 or so. A lot of the spin-offs aren't canon (Ghost Babel, Acid, etc.)

The Mega Man classic continuity has a couple dozen.

Being super conservative, I would count 1-11, &B, X 1-8, Zero 1-4, ZX, ZXA, Legends 1-2 and Misadventures, which is 30. I'd earnestly argue that the Gameboy games, Challenger from the Future and Xtreme 1-2 at a minimum are also canon (for a total of 38), but that's a little more up for debate.

Seems like Capcom is the king of long continuities. Resident Evil was mentioned, Monster Hunter has an ass load of games and spinoffs and the story is so unimportant that I can't imagine they contradict each other or aren't canon, and I'd bet Street Fighter and its spinoffs are canon outside of crossovers

I don't think the Legend of Heroes games are all in the same continuity - anything before Trails in the Sky is, to the best of my knowledge, not in the Trails continuity.

Heck, even the Trails games are debatable because of Nayuta, which I seem to recall has nothing to do with the other Trails games (unless the later games linked it in - I'm behind on Trails, so this info may be out of date).

Nayuta has nothing to do with the other Trails it's just in name only.

And legend of heroes isn't even the whole continuity. The Legend of Heroes 1 is a spinoff of Dragon Slayer so if you're counting Trails as part of all legend of Heroes then your should count it as part of dragon Slayer as well.

Falcom makes a fucking ton of games IDK how they even keep up.

Even if we did, Pokemon has recently embraced the alternate timeline stuff.

Which is dumb, because the Pokemon games have never had much continuity anyway. Theyre mostly disconnected stories with a few references.
