It happened to me with a bank teller and a customer service rep. They asked how I was doing. I didnt say it but felt they didnt really care about me was just making fake small talk and didnt ask it back. Should I have?

I guess it's rude.
I will generally tell them I have no desire to answer that question. Better to be honest I suppose.

In both situations. I just said I am doing good and moved on to the reason I was there. Make a deposit with bank teller. Get help with customer service.

Maybe one of these days I should actually give a real answer instead of I am doing good. Even with acquittances I am not close with like a friend of a friend. It just feels like I said in OP. They just trying to make small talk they dont really want to hear about your life.

You should not.

It's a platitude, they're scripted. Don't go off script, it weirds people out.

"Hey, how you doing."
"Good, how you doing."

You're done, societal obligation fulfilled.

I usually say "Good, and you?" Ninety percent of the time, I don't get an answer.
