They're going to do this the wrong way by starting with a conclusion and drawing the line(s) starting from there.

It's probably always been a thing, just overlooked in the past by labeling folks as quirky, insane, mentally ill, etc..

One can reasonably concede that our food needs improvements, but I would probably sooner trust that Aussie lady that served her and her ex husband's family death cap beef Wellington to make those changes than anyone within the current circus in DC.

I thought it was basically that we only somewhat recently started classifying and treating autism? The boomers and WW2 generation had people with autism, but they yelled at the person until they acted like everyone else. So maybe the cause of the rise in the number of patients is simply because we understand more as a society.

one day, someone should look at historic contexts and list those that could had autism or other mental disorders, be interesting to see how it might have effected history.

I hate everything about this. The fact they speak in such certain terms of what we'll know "by September" should be a giveaway they are trying to push an agenda before doing "research."

It's also such bullshit that people can't think to distinguish between high-functioning autism, which I suspect is having a much higher diagnosis rate and could otherwise have fit under umbrellas of other types of "mental disorder" (or just being considered a generally weird person) in past decades, and the type of autism most people traditionally think of when hearing the word, usually the most obvious cases of social disconnect and lack of verbal skills. Encouraging a neurotypical society where everybody follows the same daily mechanisms is a great way to discourage innovate thinking skills. People use the word "autism" so generally, it may as well be a synonym for all kinds of neurodivergence.

It's clear there is an initiative here and anyone not disturbed by this bullshit can look to themselves as to how we've ended up with such a wreck of our society.

Also, I'd like to see someone really press Musk about all this.

I'm on the spectrum somewhere. I got an informal diagnosis from a doctor. I know growing up I didn't notice or follow social cues like looking people in the eye. There was no term used when I was in elementary school. Just a lot of disappointment and yelling that I wouldnt "act normal" because I'd be shy, not talkative, or look people in the eye.

30 years later I STILL have trouble looking people directly in the eye. But I didn't get a proper diagnosis growing up, just a lot of hard feelings forced upon me because I was weird.

Point is, we've always existed. Just in the past it was a lot of "JUST ACT NORMAL" instead of actual diagnosis and facts.

I guess it's a good thing that I've never been officially diagnosed. One of my partners was looking into it for herself, since she also suspects she's on the spectrum, but decided it's probably better to not have any paperwork for this administration to weaponize.

We really need to find a way to counteract tribalism. The mindset that "everyone has to be normal, and my group is the benchmark for normal" has been poisoning society for centuries.

This. There are people who didn't get diagnosed with autism until adulthood, because we're simply better at identifying it now than 30 years ago. It's not an epidemic, were just getting better at catching what was already there. Same thing with ADHD.

starting from a conclusion and working backwards to find "evidence" that supports their worldview is how fundamentalist christian science works. i went to a pentacostal christian school as a kid and this is how they approached anything that appears to contradict their interpretation of the bible.

with enough practice, this method becomes habit, and is applied to non-religious subjects.

a large wing of the the republican party has already been this way for a long time.

I've been assuming the main reason is because they keep reclassifying one disorder into a type of another. Like how Asperger's is now Autism Spectrum Disorder.

It's because they're old af fossils who come from a time period when mental illness (or just flat out being different) was treated like something to be ashamed of by the general populace.

In the last fifteen years or so autism has been reclassified as a spectrum disorder.

The diagnostic criteria changed, people who previously went undiagnosed started to be diagnosed. Like, Asperger's isn't even really a thing anymore in diagnostic criteria, it's a new ballgame.

Tangentially related, but I was dropping off some fliers at the adult video store, and within a minute the lady at the counter was all "please don't take this the wrong way but are you neurodivergent?" and I'm all "got it in one" and kept going.

A few weeks later it hit me: I wonder how much different my life might have been if any of my childhood instructors or school employees had been that aware.

Like, I went through my entire scholastic career without anyone saying a word, and the damn porn store cashier clocked me in less than forty seconds.

They'll be a little more subtle about it at first but basically this.

If you think you're autistic, don't bother getting diagnosed as it'll just end up putting you on a government list.

Idk if mass deaths are required but once people start seeing how reckless the government acts in regards to even American citizens, they might wake up.

Some won't until the government has busted in their door and put a bullet in their spouse, though.
