I was planning for a trip and wanted to treat myself with a really nice backpack that's good for travel. Then I realized I had no reference point for how much a backpack costs.

Up to and including college, my parents bought my backpacks. When I entered the working world, I used my college backpack. Since I've started working, I've been getting a steady stream of free backpacks, as onboarding gifts, freebies from vendors, swag from conferences, etc. I probably average 1 backpack every 2 years. If you include duffels and small drawstring bags, it's like 1 a year.

Just 1. Every other backpack that I have owned was given to me or I stole it.

Just get a stick and a bandana and tie the bandana to the stick.

Boom, you've got mobile storage and you're ready to stow away on a train out West.

I bought a backpack in high school and used that for like a decade+. Then I recently bought a backpack that I could use for the weekends that I stay at my gf's place. Didn't need a whole suitcase every time. So 2 for myself.

I've also bought 3 backpacks for my son so far. None of his stuff lasts very long. Dunno if kids stuff is just cheaply made or he's too rough with them

None. The one my parents got me for college was amazing and lasted for years. Until it got stolen.

Now in the extremely rare situation I need/want a back pack I just use my roommate's

I was the kid who brought all my books with me in my backpack. Never used lockers, because of how dumb it was to get a locker and be met with a bunch of rules in terms of maintaining them/clearing them out by the end of the day or they confiscated/thrown out.

I probably went through at least 8 or 9 backpacks, got most of my backpacks from goodwill or something

Man, I had forgotten about those years when you'd have 4 textbooks, 2 binders, and a whole bunch of random stuff in your backpack.

Today, I basically just have a laptop and a notepad in mine. If I have to stuff a jacket in there too, that feels "heavy" to me now.

I mostly use mine either when I need to travel for work and thus need to haul my work laptop around or when I am going on a plane I use it for my carry on.

Since backpacks last me like 10 years nowadays? I now tend to try to buy quality ones.

Damn. We did not go to the same school. I used a backpack everyday... And also used a locker. I can't remember our lockers ever being gone through, either.

One. Never had one in school. I actually bought mine after the military when I got my civilian job. The last hour of work was cleanup time and we have a really nice locker room with showers. So I get paid to clean myself and I bought a backpack to just bring a fresh set of socks/boxers/shorts/t-shirt to change into after my shower.

Used it a few years until I switched over to a full gym bag.

Two that I've bought for myself... Absolutely love them. One I use every day to bring my lunch and other stuff to work. The other I take when I travel/hike. Both bags have been through the ringer and are still working great for me

If you are looking for a durable and quality bag I can't recommend North St. enough. I have the Davis and the Flanders.

Never heard of that brand before. I'll check them out.

2 buy-it-for-lifes sounds about right to me too. Like a rugged everyday one, and maybe an ultra lightweight one for hiking.

Staples back to school sales almost give them away. Like seriously I took advantage of a manufacturer's coupon error and walked away with 10 free backpacks.

think only 1 i bought. most were grade school days my parents got me. my main one i bought to carry around my laptop but at the time i bought a bulky 17 inch gaming laptop that was too big to even fit it so i just kept it. then went back to college so used it for that for a few months and then covid so all my classes switched to online.

last one i got as a gift from my brother that i've never used. i think i have 3 now. not even sure where i got the 3rd from but i've had it forever so might have been one from high school.
