You manage a whole zoo, but it's kinda meh because the enclosures are caged and relatively small. You can't get in there and pet them.

No it just unlocks that type of cat/dog as a pet option at the hideout. The actual cat/dog stay in the overworld >_>

Also the hideout in this game is like a fucking giant farm that you build-up throughout the game.

That's sorta like in Yakuza Ishin, another samurai game. Your hideout has a farm you build and tend to. And inside you can cook ingredients

I *think* you also adopt some cats but I forget
