I've got a GTX 1070ti from 2017 I want to upgrade and everything I can find from Nvidia is either sold out, barely better than what I have, or over $800 (mostly over $1000). Looking at benchmarks, the Radeon 7800 xt seems to be the best "bang for my buck" right now but even that is about $600 after taxes. Is that just what the market is like now, or are there better options? For context, the Monster Hunter Wilds benchmark software put my PC on low everything and it was chugging along at around 30fps. I don't need it to be running high at 4k at 120hz on ultrawide, but getting to at least a stable 60 on mid settings doesn't feel like an unreasonable request at a price point lower than just buying a PS5 pro.

AMD is about to release the 9070 and 9070 XT at a reasonable MSRP assuming they live up to AMD's claims. Maybe wait for those to release and get reviewed.

Dont Intel have some decent options? Though there are plenty of other reasons to avoid them, but if youre on a budget and have to take what you can get

But yeah, NVidia are a ripoff right now.

If I were getting a desktop Id almost certainly be going for the 7800 XT.

Hmm... that's probably the best call, but newegg is running a deal right now where I can get MH wilds for free with the purchase of an AMD card, so performance vs cost savings in waiting is a bit skewed because I'm effectively getting $70 off due to the bundle. Plus I'm a bit worried the new cards will be perpetually sold out for months, but if the old cards drop in price by more than $70 it'll be worth the wait.

In terms of getting anything from NVIDIA at this point I think open box is probably the only way I can reasonably justify one, although open box purchases always make me nervous.

I'm hoping to be able to get one of the new cards on Thursday. Everything else is way too expensive. 7900x and XTX are the currently available cards that are most interesting to me, but their stock generally seems bad and the prices are astronomical.

I have a 7900XTX and have had a good experiences with it both on Windows and Linux. Justifying to people why they should buy a >=1K Graphics Card is a tall order though (which also includes most of Nvidia's mid-best offerings).

Update: looks like that MH Wilds AMD bundle sale on newegg goes through until end of April, so I can afford to sit it out a week or so and see what happens with the new cards.

Stay away from Nvidia for now. Their power connector is still melting and some units are missing raster units

No. AMD's GPUs aren't affordable either.

I'm getting eager to play MH Wilds myself. Just gotta wait and see what happens with the GPU and then I can start buying the rest of the parts I need. Hopefully Capcom will find some way to fix the game's performance issues too by the time I get my new PC ready to go.

Thats still a top tier card. They are ridiculously priced at that tier. The 7800 XT is like half the price and unless youre running AI models on it you probably arent going to notice the difference outside of benchmarks. (And its still overkill, but the price difference between it and the next step down is small enough that its still the one Id get.)

Yeah I'll have to see what to pivot to I guess. MH Wilds having dogshit performance for the visual quality of the game seems to be a problem with a lot of otherwise decent GPUs unfortunately. My first time around building a PC was 7 years ago, and I went for a pretty mid build then. The PC still served all my needs well, but I'd like to get something much nicer this time around if I can.

So the 9070 went on sale this morning at 6am and unsurprisingly even though they said they had plenty to sell at MSRP it's sold out everywhere. So my takeaway here is more or less that upgrading my video card is a waste of time and I may as well just play on console.

These were, but now AMD is saying the next batch will cost more than the first printing:
https://wccftech.com/amd-radeon-rx-9070-gpus-increase-in-price-after-first-batch-is-sold-out/
Reports indicate that only a limited number of AMD Radeon RX 9070 GPUs will be available at their MSRP at launch, while the stocks coming later will be more expensive.

It is unclear as to how much price increment we can expect, but it will be noticeable. We did see some sellers listing the GPUs for up to $849, which is a staggering $250 higher than the official MSRP of the RX 9070 XT and going what INET has notified, the RX 9070 XT will easily touch $800 or above with the custom AIB editions.

FYI the RX 7800 XT is now sold out everywhere as well, so there goes the only reasonably priced option on the market, likely permanently.
