Yes it's half a dark comedy. They can make the most serious of real life moments hilarious.

Part of it comes from the characters being dumb or ignorant. They also try to repeat sayings they've heard before in an attempt to sound smart, but they butcher it and sound even dumber.

I wouldn't call it a comedy, dark or otherwise, but it is a drama with pretty frequent comedic moments.

Not a comedy, but fucking funny throughout. With my sense of humor there is tons of funny shit. Christopher and Paulie often say and do shit that makes me laugh.

And pretty much no consequences for killing people, which makes me take it a little less seriously

Well, as certain recent real-life events have shown, it's a realistic portrayal of the Feds as needing to spend years building an airtight case against these types of mobsters, and anything from incompetence to sheer dumb luck can set them back to the drawing board (it also plays well into the show that their resources are spread thin after 9/11). Which is why something like the Bevilaqua murder hung over Tony's head for the entire rest of the series after it happened, and why mobsters tend to get offed internally before the wheels of justice can get to them.

Some of the crimes are a bit too unrealistic in how nothing comes of it. But for police accuracy, this isn't the type of show that The Wire is. It's all about the journey and the relationships between characters.

With the crimes, it's sort of anachronistic. The mob in the world of The Sopranos is like the mob of the 60s and 70s in real life where they had the power and ability to get away with crimes easier. You have to sort of see it with that kind of lens. Besides, the show still rocks anyway.

The Wire is similar with the character Brother Mouzone and how the criminal organizations work and things like the Sunday truce.

Sorta. They get away with murder easier, but RICO is an enormous threat and has all but annihilated the mafia in ways they didn't have to worry about in the 60s. Like, in the 60s the made men could waltz into high end restaurants and clubs. In Sopranos, you get free slices of pizza at a friendly parlor.

IRL, the mob barely murders anyone anymore since they can't survive any more FBI scrutiny. Sopranos is a little more kill happy, but they're usually good in how they get away with it

Right. That's why I put sort of. The mob in the show seems to have more influence along to the mob in their prime too and can get away with more stuff. They still did their fair share of fine dining.

Still, you'd figure with some of the murders the feds wouldn't be waiting for a RICO level case.

If I remember right the last known mob hit was 2010-2012-ish. I've heard in some of the smaller non-NYC cities some of the OC departments have been shut down. I wonder though that now that the FBI are focusing on other groups that the mob could bounce back a bit. They'll never reach the heights they used to be of course, but I still wouldn't count them completely out.

Reminds me of the time either Maxim or Stuff did an article about 9/11-related crime sprees, and one such crime was something like 10 different mafia outfits conspiring to boost roughly $50k worth of scrap metal from the cleanup operation. The punchline was "split that ten ways and you start to understand why Tony Soprano sees a psychiatrist."

Yeah sounds about right. The mob always did what many would think would be small time stuff (along with actual small time stuff). Before that, they basically had a piece of everything being built or renovated in NYC through bid rigging and corrupt unions and mob owned or affiliated companies. They made millions of not billions. Of course that is what helped cripple the mob once the feds found out. The Mafia commission made up of the NY bosses at the time got put away for 100 years.

To be fair, even at their peak, there were still lowly soldiers who had to make money any way they could including stealing it out of parking meters (as seen in the movie Donnie Brasco). Even in The Sopranos one character mentions hijacking a truck full of Pokemon (or "Pokey man") cards. A lot of it is because they can never hold onto any money they get from scores. They spend or gamble it all away quick.

Today there's still a few who make bigs bucks through white collar crimes like stock fraud and what have you, but the bottom has gotten even lower and lots of mob guys work legit jobs.
