ive never played a monster hunter, can i just start with whatever the latest one is or is there a story that youd want to follow between them?

i heard that the game systems are complex and the new player experience sucks and you should go in with a "mentor" who teaches you the game. is this true as well?

There's no real through story. It's the same world and setting, but that's about it. There's no harm story wise in just playing the latest.

Game is pretty complex but you'll be able to pick up the basics and go hit monsters without much trouble. Going beyond that can get pretty complicated pretty quick, though. Armor skills, palico builds, making the most of a weapon, recipe combinations, food buffs, maximizing the farm, etc. will be a lot to pick up on without someone helping you out.

If you're unsure about dropping $70 on a game you're not sure you'll like, I'd recommend picking up an older one (World or Rise) on the cheap and trying it briefly just to see if you even like the feel of it. I'd probably suggest dual blades for something you can get mashy on while learning.

yeah there's no story which makes me laugh when people talk about getting "spoiled"

like dude its literally the same story every game, supposed monster wrecking the ecosystem, turns out it's actually some humongous monster doing the real damage for mind numbing final boss fight, nobody buys these games for the plot

And yet they insist on shoe-horning a plot in both World and this one. World was unbearable. Needing to clear that atrocity before easy coop is unlocked stopped me from playing more than one character and from buying and playing it on another platform. I also lost my PS account and save one time. Never wanted to start again cuz the story was such a slog.

Rise was great for no bloat.

From what people who got review copies were saying, story in this game works closer to how World did. Unfortunately. Feels life moving backward and makes me think they didn't look too closely at feedback about that.

literally this.

its just there as an excuse to beat the crap out of these monsters until they're dead so you can harvest their parts to craft weapons, armor and shit. lol

I don't care about spoilers for movies and games and whatnot.

Except for Monster Hunter.

Not the story, but what monsters will be in the game.

I watched the world pre-release stuff out of excitement and when I got to play the game I was very disappointed that there was like one or two monsters in the entire game that hadn't been revealed already. Since then when new MH games get announced I black out MH-related social media stuff. I haven't watched any Wilds thing since the reveal of the forest biome and I have been fortunate to only have three or four of the monsters spoiled since then.
