Album #112 The Temptations- All Directions (1972) USA Runtime: 33:33 1st time listen Recommend a listen? YES I've heard a couple of tracks off this album (Papa Was a Rolling Stone & Mother Nature), but this the first time listening to this album in it's entirety. This isn't your "My Girl" Temptations. This is more a funk/psychedelic/soul album. This is a much more experimental Temptations album and I'm here for it. There's a nice mix of tracks here. From the funky as hell opener to even a few tender moments with some tastefully done ballads. Its just a quality album. Honestly the Temptations had always been a greatest hits album group to me, but I clearly need to dig a little deeper into them. I really enjoyed this one. Highly recommended. Album #113 Turbonegro- Apocalypse Dudes (1998) Norway Runtime: 47:29 1st time listen Recommend a listen? YES Death punk, glam punk, hard rock...however you want to categorize them this album kicks all sorts of ass. I had stumbled across Turbonegro just before I started this journey and so it kind of got in the way of a deep dive with them. So when saw that one of their albums was included I was stoked. This album just never lets up. From start to finish its a great song after another. My favorite tracks are probably The Age of Pamparius and Prince of the Rodeo which has a Motorhead-esque feel to it. I wish I heard about these guys all the way back when I was in high school. I could see me & the boys blasting this as we cruised 6th Avenue (Which was our version of main street) late on a Friday night. Great record. Highly recommended. Now I need to check out more. Album #114 DJ Shadow- Endtroducing... (1996) USA Runtime: 63:03 1st time listen Recommend a listen? Yes If samples were an album. That's about the best way I could describe this record. More to the point it's a instrumental hip hop album. This album has to be a contender for the most samples ever put on a record. With my limited knowledge of hip hop the only record that I've ever heard that has this many samples would be The Beastie Boys- Paul's Boutique. (Which is an amazing record btw...it better be in this book) This is another one that's not going to be for everyone. I'm really only going recommended it to fans of hip hop and extreme music geeks such as myself. It's an impressive feat to say the least how well he wove all these samples into a cohesive and digestible album. Album #115 Peter Gabriel- So (1986) UK Runtime: 46:30 Heard it before/own it Recommend a listen? Yes I mean this album is tied directly to my childhood as I grew up in the 80s. The videos for Sledgehammer and Big Time were played in MTV's rotation for a few years. In Your Eyes played a big part in John Cusack's Say Anything. (A movie that I don't hate, but I have never really understood why it was so beloved) All those songs are great, but my 2 favorite tracks on the album have always been "Red Rain" and beautiful duet with Kate Bush "Don't Give Up." Both of those songs I never get tired hearing. It's a great record. Hearing this album for me is like my own personal time machine. When I hear this album, I'm 9 years old. I'm sitting in my parents living room on the brown shag carpet, playing with my Kenner Star Wars figures and MTV is playing one this album's videos in the background. There's a few albums from 1986-1987 that can do that for me. Highly recommended. Album #116 Billy Bragg and Wilco- Mermaid Avenue (1998) UK/USA Runtime: 50:08 Heard it before/own it Recommend a listen? YES This is an interesting album. After seeing Bragg's performance at a Woody Guthrie tribute show, Nora Guthrie asked Bragg to put music to her father's unreleased lyrics. After a couple of years Bragg felt a little overwhelmed by the project and he brought in the band Wilco to help him out. The rest is history. There's a ton of great tunes here. They were incredibly successful with the project. Natalie Merchant guest stars and sings on 2 of the best songs on the album. "Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key" and the simple, but beautiful "Birds and Ships." Most of my favorite tracks are on the front half of the album, but that's not to say that there's not some other great tracks on the back half. It's a very good album and well worth a listen. Album #117 Motrhead- Ace of Spades (1980) UK Runtime: 36:34 Heard it before/own it Recommend a listen? YES When I'm looking to listen to some nasty, dirty heavy metal/speed metal I usually end up listening to Motrhead or Tank. If you've never listened to a Tank album start out with their "Filth Hounds of Hades" album. It crushes. This is somewhere in my top 3 Motrhead albums. Overkill and Bomber are the other 2. Album #118 Deee-Lite- World Clique (1990) Japan/USA/USSR Runtime: 41:23 1st time listen Recommend a listen? Sure Deee-Lite is a dance/house group that hit the scene with this album in 1990. This album was the first of only three records they released. Their big hit was Groove is in the Heart. It's the only song on this album that I have heard before. I always thought it was a catchy enough tune, but I didn't like it enough to warrant a purchase of the album. I'm generally not a fan of this genre, but there's always exceptions to the rule. This album does have a good variety of other genres mixed in. From psychedelia to funk to techno to name a few. This album has no business being part of the 1001, but it's not without it's merit. It's ultimately a good album, but it's not a great or essential album. It is still worth a listen. There's some good tunes here, no doubt, but nothing really blows my mind. "Groove is in the Heart" is easily the best track on the record. Recommended, but try a few of the highlights to see if this is something up your alley. Album #119 N.E.R.D.- Fly or Die (2004) USA Runtime: 54:55 1st time listen Recommend a listen? No N.E.R.D. is a rock and hip hop band. I'm not going to have a lot to say about this one. I didn't like it at all. In fact I had to listen to it in 2 sittings. I hated the vocals. I hated the arrangements. I hated the songs. "She Wants to Move" and "Maybe" are this albums singles. Maybe features Lenny Kravitz. Give those a listen and if you don't like those, you're not going like anything from this group. This is my least favorite album from the 1001 I've listened to so far. Album #120 Pere Ubu- The Modern Dance (1978) USA Runtime: 36:36 Heard it before Recommend a listen? Yes Pere Ubu is post punk/experimental punk/rock group. I always liked some of their material, but it wasn't until I watched a few live performances that I really began to appreciate this strange and awesome band. (I posted a link to a live performance below) Now I can't help but to see lead singer Dave Thomas's manic performances in my head when I hear their music. This is another one of those bands/albums that REALLY isn't going to be for everyone. I thought that this was a great quote about Dave: "Mr Thomas's voice is that of a man muttering in a crowd. You think he's talking to himself until you realize he's talking to you."-Griel Marcus That pretty much sums how I feel when I listen to Pere Ubu. Album #127 The Sisters of Mercy- Floodland (1987) UK Runtime: 49:24 Heard it before/own it Recommend a listen? YES Now here's an album that have damn near wore out. It's absolutely bonkers that these goth rock icons have only ever released 3 albums. This is the band that was my real introduction into the goth rock scene. I had obviously heard and other goth rock bands/songs before, but when I heard "Lucretia My Reflection" that is when I stood up and listened. That is were I decided that I need more bands like this in my life. This album has tracks with more of a driving goth rock force and then it also has tracks that are more dark and gloomy. They released 3 singles for the album. (Dominion, Lucretia, and This Corrosion) All of which had great music videos. All of which are worth checking out on YouTube. Highly recommended. The only record that I own of his is the album he did with Count Basie. ("First Time!") Which is a great album as well. I haven't listened to a lot of Duke's full albums. Mostly I've only listened to bits and pieces of his discography. I'm reviewing the original release. My favorite tracks are probably Festival Junction and Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue. Album #123 Lou Reed- Berlin (1973) USA Runtime: 49:30 1st time listen Recommend a listen? Yes I admittedly haven't dug very deep into Reed's music. I have a couple of Velvet Underground albums that I like well enough, but I rarely reach for them. I have a few tracks of his solo material on "mix tapes", but that's about it. This album and Transformer has been on my to check out list for a very long time. So how do I feel about it now that I've listened to this album? I feel like I feel about the Velvet Underground records. I ultimately like them, but I'm rarely in the mood for Reed's voice. Now don't take that the wrong way, I would still lay my money down to buy this album. When the mood strikes I'll love this album. It's certainly deserves to be on this list. Album #124 Frank Sinatra- Songs for Swingin' Lovers (1956) USA Runtime: 45:00 1st time listen Recommend a listen? YES So we arrive at our second Sinatra album in this journey. I've heard many of these songs many, many times before, but I've never listened to this entire album until now. Every track is great and superbly arranged. Honestly I think I'd recommend someone looking to get into Frank to start here. It's just so easily accessible and immediately endearing. It's just a perfect representation of this era of music. My favorite tracks are Love is Here to Stay and I've Got You Under My Skin. Many people not familiar with this genre of music will recognize Cole Porter's "Anything Goes" as it's performed by Willie Scott in the opening sequence for Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. The arrangement on this version is very different, but you'll easily recognize the tune. This album is filled with standards and I highly, highly recommend it. Highlights: You Make Me Feel So Young It Happened in Monterey You're Getting to be a Habit With Me Too Marvelous for Words Pennies From Heaven Love is Here to Stay I've Got You Under My Skin Makin' Whoopie Anything Goes How About You? https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLL-NbN8uTOihE8pVvExgTDTS5ZJ8hJH2i&si=FiqrOJN812E67AGQ Recommended out of the 1001 so far: 108/124 New album listens for me so far: 56 Heard it before: 68 --- "I have seen great intolerance shown in support of tolerance."-Samuel Taylor Coleridge ... Album #125 Frankie Goes to Hollywood- Welcome to the Pleasure Dome (1984) UK Runtime: 64:01 1st time listen Recommend a listen? Sure It's fitting that this album is reviewed after the previous review, as they got their name from a newspaper headline about Frank Sinatra. This band has always been the band that plays "Relax" to me and nothing more. And I would go oh yeah that was them to when I heard "The Power of Love." So this was interesting to finally hear more from this band after all these years. They're kind of a blend of pop, new wave, and dance music. This was one of two albums they released before they parted ways. Of the 16 tracks there's 4 covers that while they're all done relatively well, I could've done without at least 3 of them. (Born to Run, Ferry Cross the Mersey, San Jose) Mostly just to tighten up the album so that it flows better. All the covers, besides War honestly feel a little out of place. War at least makes sense in context of what song that follows it. (Two Tribes) I prefer the original material on the album. (See highlights below) Ultimately it's a good albeit uneven record. I'm glad I finally gave it a spin, but should it be on this list...I don't know. It's certainly worth at least a listen. Recommended. trentpac posted... Album #125You're spot on about it being uneven and packed with filler. They wanted the event of a double album, but didn't have enough material. This album was a huge deal in the UK. Frankie were the biggest band of their day, and got 3 consecutive #1 singles, which was almost unheard of back then. The production on the album is fantastic, and the singles still sound great today. --- 'Vinyl is the poor man's art collection'. Let in the refugees, deport the racists. ... Copied to Clipboard!

I like them but they're definitely a Trevor Horn bash more than their own band. The following record is more them and better in certain ways, but Welcome to the Pleasuredome always sounded like more of an event than a record to me, if that makes sense --- "I, Garland, will knock you all down!" ... Album #126 The Carpenters- Close to You (1970) USA Runtime: 38:35 1st time listen Recommend a listen? Yes The Carpenters are a brother and sister 70s pop duo. When I was a child my parents had and constantly played their greatest hits record. I hated it. It was just not the type of music a kid in the 80s was going to be attracted to. A couple of years ago I ended up listening to a few tracks of theirs on Youtube and for whatever reason they all of a sudden just clicked with me. Now I wouldn't say that I became a super fan of theirs, but I certainly started liking more of their music. They're still very hit or miss for me. I'll either absolutely love a song or I feel completely indifferent to it. So this album is very hit or miss for me, but when it hits... Chef kisses. I gotta say I really like Karen Carpenter singing Burt Bacharach tunes. And lucky me, they cover 3 of Bacharach's songs. There's some really fantastic tracks here (See highlights) and I'm glad i finally listened to this album. Karen tragically died from a heart attack caused by her struggles with anorexia. Such a shame, she clearly still had a lot more to offer the world. Remember folks there's always help for you out there, should you need it. Recommended.
