I hear about the games all the time, but nothing about how the games they make actually are.

Yes. There's been a few really good RPG Maker games. The two most popular ones are probably To The Moon and Eternal Senia

To the Moon is an absolutely sensational story, and something every gamer deserves to play.

yes^ & probably. rpg maker is a great and powerful engine. You guys should get the one that's free now (RPG Maker VX there is a topic about it)

Symphony of War The Nephilim Saga is pretty kino.

I've heard of a few good ones that were already mentioned. But what I want to know is how many of these actually have engaging combat (and not just copying an existing battle system whole-hog)? Like neither To the Moon nor Corpse Party can be considered RPGs in the traditional sense.

Eternal Senia uses bump combat (aka Ys 1 & 2) which isn't exactly original but it's very unique among RPG Maker games and isn't something you find often in general.

Plenty if you like RPG Maker games. If you don't I don't think there's any game that would change your mind.

bewitched knight and the other games from same creator are all really good yuri jrpgs

In addition to all the other games mentioned, In Stars and Time is great.

Theia The Crimson Eclipse is a pretty solid free to play Italian rpg maker game with an English translation. It uses a ton of stolen assets from other games, but it has pretty solid mechanics and the story is decent with some pacing issues. I think it took me like 30ish hours to complete.

Lots of stuff but you have to accept that sturgeon's law is also very much in effect

Also Felvidek is a horror comedy game set in 15th century Slovakia with a pretty unique art style. The guy who made that game ended up getting to work with the Kingdom Come 2 team.

Forever Home is excellent. Full disclosure, I know the guy who made it IRL. But it's also just really good anyway.

The first hour or two have some over the top anime cringe troping but if you can power through that, it shapes up into a really good game.

ive also played some pretty good fetish games on rpgmaker that appeal to my particular fetishes but cant really discuss that here

The CE rpg was being made in one of the rpg maker games. It never got finished afaik.

I dont remember a CE rpg. I remember a CE pokemon game by Gameboy using Pokemon Essentials but not a general rpg.
