Homeowner's Association.

The people who spend their lives wandering through their own neighborhood measuring complete stranger's grass with a ruler for the chance to get people in trouble over menial bullshit in their own homes.

Basically the grown-up version of Randall from Recess.

Ok I was getting worried that I made a real folly there. Snitching on someone's grass length qualifies as small shit.

Not part of an HOA but I had this neighbor who would tell the landlord that my porch light was on at night. I come home from work after midnight of course I'm going to need my outside light.

And sometimes embezzle the money from HOA fines and dues for themselves, or make themselves exempt from the rules.

Imagine having an HOA.

Literally the first question we've asked about every house we've ever looked at was whether it had an HOA.

Where I live now, when my neighbor doesn't like my grass, he mows it himself. You know, like a rational damn human being.

We repay him with baked goods, because we both bake a lot, lol.

Yes, sort of. Some rules are legally binding to the point they can take your house. Some try to enforce illegal rules, though.

Yes, though some states are far friendlier to the HOA than others.

I was *staunchly* anti-HOA for a long time, because I lived in a neighborhood with almost draconian rules. I have adapted my stance because I see the value in maintaining insurance over common areas, for example. I just moved into an HOA neighborhood, but the rules are fairly sensible, and I fully intend to get on the board and further defang it at the earliest possible opportunity.

If you get fined and don't pay, or don't pay the HoA dues, they can put a lien on your house, and even foreclose on your house.

Eh, if he's within the city ordinance for grass height it's not the neighbor's business. Its usually when it goes over the ordinance (8 inches in my county) where it's a fair issue since that height attacks rodents and etc

I think it'd be a lot better to go knock on that neighbor's door, say "Hey, I noticed your grass is getting kinda tall, wanted to make sure everything is okay" or maybe offer to cut it for them. I know that doesn't fly in every neighborhood, but I think it would in a lot of them.

Tall grass fosters ticks 'round here, and we aren't allowed to keep chickens, so I intend to keep my lawn pretty well shorn.

Yeah I fucking hate HOAs

When I lived with my mom, we had a tyrannical HOA president. The biggest thing I remember was the president was annoyed by his neighbor's kid playing basketball, so he sent a letter saying all houses need to remove their hoops. It ended up being rescinded a little later since he did get it approved by the other members. But putting the hoop back up required a permit from the HOA, so the president vetoed every application to put hoops back.

It also sucked that the meetings were at the headquarters on the other side of town, like an hour away. When the pool key changed to a digital key, we would have to go all the way out there to get a new one every year. My mom did not have the time or money for gas to make it out there, so we just stopped being able to go to the pool.

I made sure to not have a HOA when I bought my own house

I believe it.

We had our first association meeting last week. At the entrance of the development we've got a renter who is running a business out of the house. They also put up a swingset with ARB approval. One of the older neighbors called them out, and the builder (they've got double POA votes until construction is complete) was like "Oh, that's my rental".
Dunno how I feel about it yet. I'm a big believer in follow the rules and make the changes organically. Only like four of the fifteen current homeowners actually attended, though. That kinda feels bad.

funny timing with this topic...im currently stuck at my apartment unable to leave for work because the same ghetto tweaker neighbors who prevent me from being able to park my car here (because they ransacked and vandalized it in the past) have been letting their 2 full grown highly aggressive male pitbulls run loose around the complex thru the night.

the 2 dogs are currently out loose and i gotta wait until 9am when animal control opens to snitch about the hostile pitbulls preventing me from walking across town to go get my car to drive to work.

so the same people who prevent me parking my car here, are now preventing me from getting to work altogether (and yes this is a racist situation against me)...does this make me a bad snitch for calling animal control?

edit: my evil neighbors are trying to nullify my sig ^_^

My favorite teal deer is the empath ;)

I can't even imagine having that many houses. In our old HOA, it was more like 200, and even that seemed like a lot. So glad to not be in that anymore. We had a handful of retirees that would ride around every Sunday and note violations, and not to ask if the single mom needed a hand power washing her driveway.

Meanwhile they didn't do SHIT when my asshole neighbor was parking in front of my garage so I couldn't leave my house

Unfortunately I don't have a lot of options to move, and almost everywhere around here has an HOA
