Not how many times you've been stopped by the same light in your life; the number of times you stopped then saw the light turn green then red again before making it through. The first stop counts.

Waiting to get to the onramp on Mercer in Seattle, you get this nice big long street you can see for half a mile away that takes you about an hour to get through if you get caught in rush hour.

I sat at a light for five cycles once because the light doesn't give protected left turns, and the entire goddamn city was going through it from the other lane.

It wasn't even a "slowly crawl forward as cars trickle through" situation, I was sitting there at the intersection the entire time. I just about lost my fucking mind.

Anyone who lives in a major city has been through at least 2 light changes on a single light. Probably even 3. Accidents and jams happen. And stupid drivers. And stalled vehicles. Tons of stuff could happen.

At that point I'm making a right turn and then a u turn. It blows my mind how many more people don't do it.

I don't know, once maybe. There isn't much traffic where I live. I can avoid lights entirely in most situations.

There used to be this one traffic light on my way home from work that has no green "right turn only arrow" meaning that at rush hour only two or three cars can make it through per light. Even though there were always a lot of cars turning right at that time of day. And sometimes, if it was REALLY bad, even they couldn't make it through because the street you turned on to was completely backed up with cars stopped right up to the intersection. So all we could get was one car turning and sort of starting to merge into the stopped traffic so they could wait for that line of traffic to start moving.

The thing is, if the roads weren't crowded it was very fast. But when it was bad, it was REALLY bad. I think I may have had it change ten fucking times on me once or twice lmao.

I never really count, but I'm sure it's been at least 4 times at a single light. The intersections that cross train tracks are especially bad. They cycle really fast so that the trains aren't waiting long. But people accelerate so slow that sometimes only 3 or 4 cars per lane make it through.

Too many to count, its just random timing. If it turns when youre just about under it then you cant really do anything and braking would be dumb obviously

Too many to count. But in the past 10years it's only been at one intersection that let's semi trucks off the interstate to an industrial road. As soon as it detects someone crossing I get stopped on the service road.

Edit: Although I can count on one hand how many times I've gone through for than 10 greens in a row lol.

That, I never do. Although it would save time I'm never in that much of a rush. I'm more about safety these days as opposed to saving time.

Right. And I'm saying if I see trouble in the left lane I'm hopping in the right turn lane and then hooking a u. I'm a patient person but if I see it really backed up like 5 lights bad as you say, I don't got time for that.
Edit: I'm not hooking a u right away if that's how you read it.

Ignoring ones that were metered to only let one car through at a time (ie. a fancy Stop sign): three times.

Nah, the way I was reading it earlier was that you were saying to just cut across everyone to make a right turn from the left lane.

Even so, I'm pretty sure that making a u-turn at a traffic light is still illegal in Missouri, so finding a place to make one might still be awkward.

I think I can recall seeing a couple of them scattered around, but I don't remember where offhand. None of the intersections I normally go through have them.

You hooking a u turn right away is how I was reading it. I've seen people basically run red lights like that. Make a right turn, then immediately make a u turn right near the intersection, then make another right turn back onto the original street. Which is definitely illegal.

I've driven though the Lincoln Tunnel at 5pm on a Friday.

The number is infinity.

There was one light where the left turn signal stayed red (like it had a red arrow and was completely separate from the other light), but the straight traffic light went green like 3 times in a row. I said fuck this and just made the turn after it turned green for the straight traffic a 4th time. idk what the fuck that was about. Only 1 guy behind me followed suit while the other 3 or 4 cars just stay put lol

Usually when I've seen a turn arrow that never activated, it's because the lead car was either too far forward or too far back and wasn't triggering the sensor. I don't know what the sensor looks like in other states, but here, they're big rings in the lane.

Well now you know. And that knowledge is definitely abusable if you know what the sensors look like.

For instance, several intersections here only give a green turn arrow if there's 3 or 4 cars waiting to turn, otherwise it's just a regular yield on green. But they only put one sensor to detect that, and just move it far back enough that it usually isn't triggered until there's enough cars in the lane. So if you just intentionally sit back on the sensor, you can get a turn arrow, even if you're the only car

Easily more than 5, and many times. Just part of rush hour traffic when combined with an accident or construction.
