But Robbie Williams is a different person?

Is he an actor or a musician? I (without sarcasm) cannot name a single song or show or piece of whatever he has ever been in.

I remember hearing about him in the mid 2000s - 2010s, but he didn't make the kind of music I liked, so I was barely aware of him.

I'll always remember his Millennium album was covered/rated in EW, alas the very same issue as Ricky Martin's, who the latter blew up 1000x more in pop culture to come.
Literally no one was asking for this monkey movie in 2024, & barely anyone under 40yrs old probably even knows who Robbie is.

He's a singer from the UK, much more popular over there, had a couple of smaller hits in the US.

So, yeah, he kinda is.

I feel this way when random American football/Basketball players are mentioned. They could comfortably walk around the UK without anyone bothering them

He's a singer. He was originally part of the boy band Take That. He left in 1995 and began his solo career in 1996, releasing his first album. His best-known songs in the States are probably Angels and Millennium. He's been very successful in the UK, 13 out of 14 of his albums have reached number one.

I guess it's a massive culture shock since I'm only just finding out apparently Americans have never heard of Robbie lol, I just always assumed he was just as well known over there (also this is the first I'm hearing they made a movie about him, wtf?)

Maybe you've heard his music before and just never even been aware of it? I mean he even had a song in GTA5

In the UK he's on a par with the Spice Girls and a lot more famous than Emma Watson.

It's OK not to know who he is if he isn't famous where you live. I never know who all the country music stars who perform at Republican events are. And I'm still not sure about that bloke who is Taylor Swift's boyfriend.

Yeah - I probably HAVE heard some of his stuff at some point - but wouldn't have known it was him.

Did a small amount of research on his American album sales - guess what? It's hard to even find numbers because I don't think he ever hit top 20 in the U.S. But apparently he's insanely popular in the UK, Germany, and Australia.

So fine - he's outside of my sphere.

That being said - I STILL don't understand how someone greenlit a biopic of this guy, for $110 million, and replaced him with a CGI ape.

That's more than the budget of Oppenheimer. And the studio heads thought "Yeah this guy is SUPER popular over the whole world!"

I didn't have a clue who he was either. Apparently he was in Take That, who I only really know as a band that toured with Rick Astley a few years ago

I also didn't know who he was before hearing about how his movie was apparently really good, so I did what I always do when I don't know, I google it.

Went to his youtube channel and sorted his videos by most popular...never heard them. But I did see that his latest upload was a clip from his movie.

I have to say, that choreography, production, and cinematography are incredible (songs pretty good too). Might have to see the movie at some point.

I also didn't know why they did a CGI ape, so.....I googled it. Apparently he was tired of regular biopics and wanted something unique and interesting, so the director came up with that idea. That's it.

Almost everyone who sees it remarks about being pleasantly surprised. Even Jeremy Jahns gave it his highest rating, and this is definitely not his style of movie.

I made the mistake of seeing Better Man before A Complete Unknown. The latter put me to sleep.

You can still fucking google him and do more than look at a picture. It would take one minute

"Rock DJ" was a jam, but yeah, it's not that strange to have not heard of him if you're in the states. He had a couple of hits here and those were like in the late 90's, so not only was he never really huge here, but he also hasn't really been relevant here in decades.

In the UK, he is about as famous as them, if not more. Hes massive over there.

Thats the thing. If you live in the US, and arent a big music nerd, you likely wont know who he is, because he never really took off over here, despite efforts being made to break him over here (I remember Millennium getting airplay, but it never became a big hit in the US).

And as everyone else has said, Google or Wikipedia wouldve answered all of this.

Here he is on-stage with Taylor Swift, the biggest pop star on the planet, in the UK, in front of 92,000 people. When she starts singing one of his songs, they go crazy and start singing along, then Robbie Williams himself comes out and they love it. He's definitely a star.
