It's been about a week now and we still haven't heard anything. What goes into apartment applications and background checks? Like what do they look for exactly?

Credit/criminal*, takes about 24-48 hours
Previous landlord reference is usually what the hold up is, it's entirely dependent on how fast they respond to the inquiry

The ideal tenant has good credit, no criminal history*, and good landlord reference(s) over a long period of time.

Assuming your state allows for criminal history to be checked for tenants*

I applied to 3 recently, one(a big corporate apartment complex) took 3 days, the other two run by single owners only took one day. that is business days though, nothing happened on the weekends

like Hospy said, credit/background checks don't take long. they can come back the same day they're run. If you haven't heard anything in a week and it's a place you really want I'd try reaching out.
