Not a fan of how it went down, and not sure he's worth Ben Johnson money (but hey, coaches don't count toward the salary cap anyway), but he got Baalke fired at least.

Hope if we sign him, he's the next great thing, and not the next Josh McDaniels.

Harbaugh vs. Carroll back on the menu. Thrown in Reid and Payton and that's quite the who's who of head coaches.

No clue what he has left, but with Carroll there the AFC West has to be in contention for best group of coaches in a division together all time now.

Also this was such a power play by Coen that it would be better off being a one-off kinda thing than something that sets a precedent.

This is why Coen made the right choice immediately running back to the Jaguars when they made the changes he wanted.

Ben Johnson betting on himself and winning is not necessarily the norm.

IMO Grades for the coach hirings:

Patriots: Mike Vrabel B+
Tennessee probably shouldn't have fired Vrabel. He's a coach that has had some success, and it's no surprise they wanted to bring him home. Patriots still have some rebuilding to do, but they have the right coach to do it with. He's probably got the highest floor of all the head coaches being hired.

Bears: Ben Johnson A+
Good hire. Maybe he'll work out, maybe he won't. But he's got the potential you want. He was most coveted for a reason. I think the Lions will be fine losing their coordinators, because Dan Campbell is still the man.

Jets: Aaron Glenn B+
Good hire. I like Glenn more than Johnson as a leader. But it's the Jets. Which should mean I grade this on a curve, but they get a reverse curve because they're the Jets. Would probably be an A on another team. I remember when he was a CB for the Jets.

Jaguars: Liam Coen A-
Good hire with potential. Young. Geez, these coaches are younger than me. That feels weird. Got Baalke fired, which should make all of Duval happy. Bring in the right GM, and develop Lawrence properly and the Jaguars could compete for the AFC South next year.

Cowboys: Brian Schottenheimer D+
Jerry Jones played chicken with Mike McCarthy, and McCarthy didn't blink. Oops. So they promoted their OC. Jerry is all in... on being mediocre while the Commanders are on the rise, and the Eagles soar. Dammit Giants. Get your act together before you become the NFC Jets.

Raiders: Pete Carrol B
Solid hire. But I'm not sure Carrol has it anymore. He could groom his successor, and in the long run that could be good for a team that has had coach after coach after coach. Can't give it more than a B though. On the upside, he makes me feel not so old! Also the guy he grooms could potentially go elsewhere. *looks at Belichick/Parcells*

I think the issue is that they're the Bears and their obsession with beating the Packers is highly distracting for them. So despite this splash hire, the NFC North still runs through Detroit for now. Packers are always ones to watch out for, but who knows about the Vikings at this point.

Worth noting: His dream job is literally coaching the Jets. Who has that as their dream job when upper management's oracle of choice is an Xbox? Glenn is gonna coach his butt off, and I like the hire.

The Cowboys, however, made the Jerryest hire ever, and will continue to suffer as long as that tyrant is in charge. He really should hire a GM so he can continue to party at games while the GM continually evaluates player talent, but his distorted heart won't allow him to do that. I *do* wonder what his Palace is... an amusement park? AT&T Stadium is "JERRY WORLD" in his soul...? Hmm...

I feel like with better coaching they would have been 9-8 this year. With a good draft, they could be competing for a wildcard spot next year. But, yeah, NFC North is Detroits (with an off chance at the Vikings fluking their way into it or the Packers winning it outright).

Like SHINE said, the NFC North is absolute cinema right now. Very hard to predict next year right now, because we have the following questions:
  • Who will Dan Campbell hire as his new coordinators, and will this cause any cultural changes that make the Lions more vulnerable? This question is most relevant to the defense, given the injuries and Campbell's offensive mind.
  • What impact will Benji being Bears HC have on Caleb Williams' development? Can he fix the culture problems in Chicago?
  • Who will be the Vikings' QB? Will they re-sign The Darnold, or is he asking for more than he's worth? Will they option Danny Dimes, who is on their practice squad? Will JJ McCarthy amount to something despite missing his entire rookie season due to injury?
  • Will the Vikes also have a chip on their shoulder, wishing to prove this last season wasn't the fluke everyone thinks it was after their January collapse?
  • Will the Packers' new President have any immediate impacts on the team, or will the Packers just continue doing their thing of drafting, developing, making the playoffs, and bowing out every year?
  • Will any team sign the guy that provides the spark they were missing this year?
It's really anybody's game. No other division has all four teams with potential paths to the division title next season.

I thought the Bears were going 9-8 this year and were, like last year, going to remain in playoff contention for most of the year.

But Eberflus said

My current prediction is that the Vikings are going to be shockingly good next year (like actually good, not like this year where you were waiting for the offense to fall off the whole season) in route to a heartbreaking NFC Championship game loss.

Same. I did not think they were going to make the playoffs but I thought they would be hanging around and feisty the whole season.

Although I guess there was that span where they played Washington, Green Bay, Detroit, and Minnesota incredibly close and only went 0-4 because of Eberflus Eberflusing and the dumbest individual play I saw of all time. So maybe they were that team and Eberflus was just one of the worst head coaches in the league I dunno.

Yeah Eberflus really cratered this team. Not to mention Waldron and his horrendous playcalling. I'm interested how they look next year with an entirely new coaching staff, with the head guy coming from a place with great culture.

Love the Ben Johnson hire, feels like a breath of fresh air with the Bears actually going for a home run swing at a head coach candidate, rather than the last few. Trying not to drink the Kool-Aid, been hurt too many times before, but it feels promising at least. Like others have said, right now the division still runs through Detroit. I think they'll regress a little bit with the loss of both coordinators, but I don't think it'll be by a lot. I assume Minnesota will start JJ McCarthy next year, so that'll be interesting to watch. As for Green Bay, they're always in the playoff mix regardless, never an easy out.

Smartest way to do it in these rare instances of losing both coordinators at once. Promote one from within, hire the other from elsewhere.

It's the Bears. Did they really think Eberflus and/or Waldron was "the guy" for Caleb? (They probably did.)
