Doesn't need to be an instantaneous thing, could be something that took a while.

Multiple times, both from stuff coming to light, but also from myself just gaining a better understanding of things.

One of my best friends in high school and my early 20's became SHOCKINGLY racist, that really sucked and I had to cut him out of my life.

Not someone I personally knew (though there have been cases of that happening too), but aside from cringey comments he made in later years, I thought Bill Cosby was a great guy and the Cosby Show was also one of my favorite shows. Then, well....

With people in my every day life? Not really. With celebrities though? Tons. It's like damn can y'all stop getting involved with heinous shit?

Dad got brainwashed by Chinese news. I grew up thinking he was so smart. Now it's like how can you possibly think this?

Yeah. Down on his luck guy joined my crew, did well, seemed to be improving in health and disposition,

and then I come back from vacation and he's fired for feeling up a coworker. Fucking whiplash.

I opened up and gave him a chance.
This past Saturday I went through his phone and saw he was messaging others for sex while I was at my family's place for Thanksgiving.

Out of nowhere one night, outside the venue, a close friend got enraged with me for starting a mosh pit at a death metal show after it was over. Started screaming at me to not come back to his house and go sleep on the street (I'd traveled to him so we could go to the event). All of a sudden some dude approaches us and tells him to shut the fuck up, I tell the dude to back-off, and then he gets in my face while my friend is STILL talking shit. I would have destroyed this guy but this isn't the safest city we're in when it comes to gang violence and I don't know what any given stranger might be packing. My friend continues having a breakdown until the next morning when he apologizes for being off his meds. I'll never think of him the same way after that and am basically much more aggressive about attacking back if someone treats me like shit, since I was in a bit of shock when it was happening.

Unfortunately quite a few due to politics. Maybe not thinking HIGHLY of someone, but having that just... I don't know... cringe moment they speak up and say something super fucking stupid and you just can't look at them the same again.

Yes, and recently. Emily Armstrong, one of my favorite singers, loved her for years from Dead Sara. Learned along with everyone else about her dark side when she became Linkin Park's new singer. Really disappointing.

I've been kind of bothered since Christmas, actually. My best friend of 20+ years came over to spend it with my family and during our conversation he started talking about how bad stuff like The Acolyte, Dragon Age Veilguard, and She-Hulk were because of stuff that I know he just read/watched online from right-wing bullshitters and took at face value, because when I asked he admitted he hasn't seen/played any of the media in question. Specifically he brought up "one minute She-Hulk is talking about how she wants to be taken seriously as a woman and in the next scene she's twerking" and "the producer for The Acolyte said she went out of her way not to cast white people".

It caught me completely off guard because he's never been like this. I didn't even know what to say other than to suggest he should watch the shows for himself and not rely on what others are saying online. Even my racist uncle came to The Acolyte's defense when my friend asked him about it and said he thought it was pretty good.

Any sports/celebrity figure I was fan of that became a MAGA.

Jack Nicklaus and Hulk Hogan come to mind immediately.

Yeah. Spoiler warning: Don't work at the same place/department as a friend. I somehow got caught up in BS and gossip that I didn't want and long story short it ruined the friendship.

As a kid I idolised my oldest brother. Hes a waste of oxygen.

Yes, there was a time I admired Elon Musk, which is becoming harder to imagine every day.

One of my closest friends in High School back in the late 90s. It was my senior year and she and I were in the too positions of our school theatre group so we spent a ton of time together and had developed what I felt was a very close bond. We were also very close to the teacher who also acted as director for the theatre group.

So the time comes when we have this big field trip with the theatre group to see the National Tour of Phantom of the Opera. Her then boyfriend, a college student who had graduated from our school 2 years before shows up and wants to visit her at the hotel. Harmless or not thats against school rules and the teacher/director was bound to enforce those rules so the boyfriend was told to leave. She was livid.

In the weeks following the field trip things were different with the teacher. He seemed to take less joy in things. At one point he said her was canceling our production of Dracula which really upset me as I had a good role as Dr. Seward and it was to be my final High School show. That night at a function he informed me that hed changed his mind for my sake. I was so grateful it nearly brought me to tears.

Eventually he filled me in on what had been going on. After the field trip, my dear friend had tried to get him fired by going to school administrators and accusing him of inappropriate behavior, which I personally knew to be bullshit as a personal witness of the event that sent her seeking revenge.

I was devastated. In my mind shed always been the sweetest kindest person. Someone I felt lucky to call one of my closest friends. To learn she could do something so evil to another person I cared about. So many fun and happy memories tainted by this new reality.

A buddy of mine randomly stopped talking to me back in May. I considered him like one of my best buds, weve known each other for almost twenty years. One day were working on learning coding, playing video games, having a great time, and then suddenly he just stops talking to me. At first I thought something bad might have happened, but then I realized he blocked me and just decided not to respond to my texts.

He finally reached out last week apologizing, saying that I said something that triggered him (no idea what it even was) and that he couldnt cope because of some kind of medication he was on, so he decided to just stop talking to me.

Like, Im glad hes ok and all, but I really just am not ok with dropping me like that. Part of me wants to just forgive and forget, and just go back to the way it was, but the other part of me is like fuck that. Im too old for this shit and dont have the patience or the energy. Dudes kind of gone off the deep end with right wing conservative nonsense too so its like.. is it really that big of a loss? Iol
