I loathed that about SS. I didn't like the floating islands and the sky theme wasn't to my taste.

Also I make my peace with losing all your items and starting anew in Zelda games, but after playing the fantastic Arkham games where your gadgets carry over, it really makes you think

Short answer is no, the sky islands are barely featured after what is essentially a tutorial on the only one of them thats a decent size.

Technically that's true of Skyward Sword too. They just keep making you go back to it.

This.

They make about a 10th of the map. If that.

I never played SS but I enjoyed the sky islands in TOTK

I think the devs said that better technology is allowing them to do what they fully intended for Skyward Sword, but in the end they removed a ton of sky islands anyway because they said it cluttered the sky too much.

So in the end they made exploring the sky extremely underwhelming, exactly the same as in Skyward Sword.

Not at all. SS's are entitely filler. While I do wish TotK's had more, and admittedly a town up there was sorely needed, but they had more, a greater variety, a much better sense of wonder and atmosphere, and are generally way better interwoven into the world.

I hate to say it, but I agree with their choice from a purely aesthetics standpoint - the beautiful sprawling majesty of BotW's Hyrule did not benefit from the addition of giant oozing holes in the ground and a bunch of random shit floating in the sky.

The Sky Islands are like..5% of gameplay.

Probably gamepkay is like

40% Overworld
20% "Other"
20% Shrines
5% Caves
5% Dungeon
5% Sky Island
5% Minigames, Story Scenario etc

i only played the first on 360 and been meaning to play the others. i think most i probably got free on pc so if this is true i guess i should stick to playing them on whatever system i have most of them on.

Skyward sword was honestly hardly sky island. Like for a game that takes place in the sky the islands themselves provide a staggeringly low amount of content

So yeah, in that way it is similar to skyward sword. The islands couldve been way better and actually provided meaningful content, but most of the time dont.

I wish they wouldve gone all the way. We already saw Hyrule in BOTW. I wanted big changes to the overworld itself other than little islands floating in the sky and holes in the ground

The Sky Islands are a smaller portion of the game. Theyre mostly there to serve as sort of dungeons you have to navigate and solve in each region.

I can see where they were coming from with saying the sky looked too cluttered, I just wonder how they could do it without just making the sky islands a separately-loaded map like Skyward Sword again. I wondered how exploring the sky would've been if it was more similar to how it looked in the initial teaser trailer.

That's a good point, actually. TotK Hyrule's aesthetic is already fucked with the half-baked approach, might as well have gone full-throttle with it.

yeah you get the worst of both worlds. Not enough to actually make the overworld feel truly fresh, but also fucks up that aesthetic if you were really into it

was also super disappointed in the depths honestly. The first visit is scary. Its like an alien world and you dont know what youre gonna find down there.

Seems like such a cool concept but then after like 3 visits youve seen pretty much everything it has to offer. I wish they wouldve made some really scary depths exclusive enemies

If they actually attempted to make keep the scary atmosphere then id have been more okay with the constant darkness. Like maybe theres some horrible monster youve never seen waiting right in front of you before you can see it.

When you realize theres almost nothing of interest for the vast majority of the exploration tho it just becomes a massive dark room full of common enemies and old bosses

Agreed. Also, the Gloomhands by all rights should had been all over the place down there, but they're actually more common on the overworld.

I wish they wouldve made more enemies like gloomhands. Those things are terrifying and feel like monsters made of evil.

I feel like the depths shouldve been full of more atrocities like that in general, not even just the hands

Remember the old concept art of giant creatures from BotW?

The Depths could've used stuff like this. I realize they ultimately want Zelda to be sorta kid-friendly but come on...lean into the creepy a little!

Yeah stuff like this is exactly what i wanted more of. It doesnt need to be that horrifying but some more abominations other than the hands wouldve made the depths feel so much scarier

Like its an alien world with weird plant life and stuff but it doesnt extend to the enemy variety at all?

i disagree SS is my fave zelda period

good story fun dungeons likable characters and your items are useful

where as to me breath of the wild and tears of the kingdom are bloated messes where it takes forever to get anywhere and the story was cut down to almost nothing and the stupid breakable weapons ruin the combat

Bloated mess is like the exact wording id use for skyward sword tho lmao. The game really doesnt have that many areas so theres just a ton of backtracking. The spirit realm areas arent fun, and i honestly just did not care for most of the characters.

The story has some of my least favorite moments in the franchise, particularly Demise.

I do not like skyward sword at all

Theres loads I havent played.

The only ones I have played are the first one, Link to the Past, Links Awakening, Ocarina of Time, Majorcas Mask, Windwaker, Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.

Honestly, I dont massively rate most of them. Breath of the Wild, on the other hand, I loved. People say it was a big departure from the rat of the series in some ways and theyre right, but thats exactly what I liked about it.
