Although Blonde is the better album, both of them are fantastic albums.

We will never get another Frank Ocean album, especially after the Coachella disaster. What a bummer

Alright Ill type out the whole story that I know, since I was pretty invested in his scheduled Coachella performance as a huge fan of his (and because Coachella is my favorite music festival ever, I try to go every year), but if you want a TLDR Ill post it at the end.

So originally, Frank Ocean was scheduled to play Coachella as one of the headliners in 2020 when the lineup was announced.

He released a few singles (DHL, In My Room, Dear April, Cayendo) leading up to the festival that all had similar artwork and theme, which made it seem like he had an album in preparation to release around his Coachella performance that year.

But then, COVID happened which canceled Coachella 2020. Then, later that same year his younger brother tragically passed away in a car accident. Those two things probably led to him canceling all his ideas and work for his planned album/possible tour that started at Coachella.

However, I believe he was still contractually obligated to perform for Coachella as a headliner. Coachella came back in 2022 with a new lineup, but he wasnt on it and told Coachella that he would instead push back his performance and return in 2023 instead.

So 2023 comes around and hes on the lineup, scheduled to perform both weekends of Coachella. The first weekend comes around and he plays the most half-assed, low effort headliner performance the festival has seen in a while. He originally had them build an ice rink with figure skaters as part of his show but for some reason scrapped all that last minute just days before, and instead just put up a very simple stage setup that blocked most of the stage view for most people, so you couldnt really see him on stage. And he barely sang for any of his songs, and was just on stage dancing/messing around for most of it.

Later for the second weekend, he ends up canceling his show completely (citing a supposed ankle injury) and Coachella is forced to drop his name from the lineup/set times for weekend 2. He was replaced with a Fred again/Skrillex/Four Tet trio DJ show as a last minute thing.

I was bummed not being able to see him (I went weekend 2) but that trio replacement performance was one of the most fun shows Ive ever been to, so in the end it was still a great time.

Since then Frank has had zero music releases whatsoever and seems to be done with music. Covid ruining his plans and the grief over the loss of his brother being the most likely cause of it.

TLDR Frank had plans for an album/show at Coachella in 2020 that was canceled, and then played a half assed/half canceled performance at Coachella 2023 showing to all his fans that hes pretty much done with music

Wow, thanks for the detailed explanation. I did infact read the whole thing, lol. What an altogether shitty situation. Cant really blame frank, that would mess me up pretty bad too. Coachella acted real pissy about it but I still get where they were coming from. Still really awful to practically make a guy perform when hes still recovering over something like that. I hope he does make some new stuff again someday, though. That trio set does sound pretty dope, though.

No problem, and yeah agreed with pretty much everything. Hopefully we get music from him eventually but it seems like hes more focused on his jewelry brand (Homer) more than anything else at the moment.

And yeah that trio set was one of the best EDM shows Ive ever been to, it was incredible. Probably better that weekend 2 got that instead of another half assed performance like weekend 1 got.
