They should completely separate conference champions from the at-large teams, until the finals

6/6 or 6/8 on two halves of the bracket. Reward SEC and Big Ten with the bye, don't leave other conferences out... but don't mix them in with at-large teams, subjectively. Those can be 4 SEC teams, 3 Big Ten, and a token ACC/Notre Dame

This is how I'd do a 14 team playoff, seeding 6 conference champs + 8 at-large teams separately

Conference champs
(1) Oregon (bye)
vs. winner of (5) Clemson @ (4) Arizona State
(2) Georgia (bye)
vs. winner of (6) Army @ (3) Boise State

At-large:
(8) Alabama @ (1) Texas
(5) Tennessee @ (4) Ohio State
(7) SMU @ (2) Penn State
(6) Indiana @ (3) Notre Dame (What occurred this weekend, Alabama instead of Clemson)

same 8 teams with different matchups (unless Alabama and Clemson won, but nvm). Oregon/Arizona State, Georgia/Boise State, Texas/Ohio State, Penn State/Notre Dame. Reward the conference champions with an easier path

If it was going be this particular 12 teams and the top 4 conference champs getting a bye, the seeding should have been:

1. Oregon
2. Georgia
3. Boise State
4. Arizona State
5. Notre Dame
6. Ohio State
7. Penn State
8. Texas
9. Tennessee
10. Indiana
11. Clemson
12. SMU

Pitt should have won it in the 2nd. On 3rd down, the QB could have walked in. He could have walked over and handed it to the receiver standing on the goal line. But no, he'd rather throw it three feet above his head even though neither of them was under any bit of pressure.
