For some reason, people think that suing for defamation is a piece of piss. Slanderer humiliated. Conviction guaranteed. Huge payout incoming.

The reality is a lot different, especially in the US. For one thing, there's the First Amendment. Then there's the fact that the complainant has to prove the statement libellous (you think Drake wants to go through proving he's not a pedo in court?). All kinds of nasty shit is going to be dug up and thrown around in full public view by both sides, and the only people who benefit are the lawyers. And the media, of course.

That's why you hear 100 threats of legal action for every actual case you see. That's why terrible people like Musk and Rowling never get 'sued into oblivion' for the awful things they say, however enjoyable that might be to watch.

Discovery would likely drag a lot of his friends and peers into it too, which could permanently damage relationships. I remember when Katy Perry got pulled in to do a deposition just because Kesha mentioned her in a text about Dr. Luke. That stuff has repercussions
