I don't think that the movie missed its moment or anything but a sequel made by prime Ridley Scott would've been better. The fact that he's like 97 and still making movies is impressive but Gladiator 2 and Napoleon are very weird movies. Like, Gladiator is probably just as ahistorical as Gladiator 2 and Napoleon but it feels internally consistent enough that it doesn't matter. Gladiator 2 has Geta and Caracalla just spawning out of nowhere (I think there's a limp handwave about their dad but he also would've come from nowhere) as white blond (their dad was Libyan), weak dandies (literally obsessed with being a manly super soldier emperor) and everything stems from that weird wrongess until it gives up and just tries to be exactly the same as the first movie.

3/5 movie. I probably won't make an effort to ever see it again on my own (maybe if I do a Ridley Scott catalogue project) but I would watch it again if someone suggested seeing it or if it were on tv as background noise. Its not bad so much as it is silly.

5/5 Absolute treasure of cinema. It helps that its one of my strongest early movie theater memories but its also just a really really great cool-ass movie. No matter how many substacks and youtube essays get made about how Gladiator is historically inaccurate I will never yield an inch about how awesome that movie is and how cool it makes ancient Rome look.
