His insistence that it be left up to the state (hey we all have heard that defense of "states' rights" before) means that he really doesn't give a fuck what anybody does. He says a law is too restrictive but then a staffer tells him that isn't what his base wants to hear so he modifies that stance a day later. His personal opinion on abortion is no different from your average Democrat but he's going to play up his role in overturning Roe v. They believe God hates abortion because he imbues zygotes with souls at the moment of conception, and they believe that they have the right and obligation to enforce God's will on others. Trump isn't theocratic, his only god is himself.
