I last played Overwatch on the blizzard client, when 2 didn't exist, and before the Brigitte update lmao. But some nostalgia hit me hard and I was going through the old blizzard store to reinstall Warcraft 3 when I saw Overwatch and remembered that it existed.

I know literally nothing about 2, I don't keep up with trendy/edgy 'game news' or whatever. I see it's F2P which isn't promising, so it's probably heavily monetized now. A shame because the loot boxes and reward system in 1 felt very forgiving, mostly because you had to buy the game in the first place. How does 2 hold up these days?

Depends on a myriad of things. If you prefer 5v5 or 6v6, loot boxes instead of using real money, or the idea they completely bailed on the PVE mode that was the entire point of OW2 in the first place.

If you're thinking OW2 is different from OW1, it's not really other than it being 5v5 instead of 6v6. It's a pretty big change, but outside of that, it's literally the same exact game.

As somebody who loved Overwatch and played it endlessly with friends... While I've never played 2, the friends I played with have, and they don't like it. It's apparently very different from the original when it comes to how the game is set up.

I've heard that if you like the original Overwatch, it's better to just wait for Marvel Rivals.

Yep. They released a statement that basically said "We don't wanna spend money and time making this, we'd rather do loot boxes."

It's the same game. In fact the newer levels are probably too large. Like every Push Map (new mode) is a walking simulator if you die. Same for Flashpoint. They added a new mode this season I think, but I stopped playing in January.

i also do hate push. i main d.va and just play unranked, so it's very not fun

I used to always play in a group of 3/4 and I'd be Lucio while they'd discuss amongst themselves who to be for team comp.

It wasn't even really my choice. They were always just like "You are a fucking godly Lucio and you kinda suck as everyone else." And really the only other hero I enjoyed at the time was Reaper, so I accepted my role.

They were surprisingly fun times.

I have fun in most of my games but I've also only played QP classic for years now. I hate being forced to pick my role/hero before I see the map, because I only play DPS on like 5 maps so I'm not going to pick pharah or widow unless I know it's one of those maps.

I see far fewer people I recognize in my days these days. for the first...5-6 years of OW I saw the same people pretty much every day and the games would be tough but fun. all of us playing the same 2-3 heroes every time and the games would be close but could go either way

now I see way more stomps because starting with less than 3 tanks usually screws you

I was a Grandmaster Sombra who retired after they reworked her.

Basically the changes are
-5v5 instead of 6v6
-Assault maps (Hanamura, Volskaya Industries, etc.) are no longer in competitive mode.
-New gamemode that I forget what it calls but it sucks.
-New heroes that come out are busted until the next one comes out, then the not-as-new hero is nerfed.
-Microtransactions up the ass.

Needless to say, I have had no desire to go back since the most fun I had was playing as Sombra, and I can't have that fun anymore.

sombra is pretty annoying now but I think they should get rid of the shift ability and do something with the translocator. it doesn't move her far enough anymore.

Yes, its a fun game if your not a completionist and your only playing to have fun. But its business practices are ludicrous. The Transformers skins that were on sale a couple months ago were something like 150 bucks CAD. Outlandish.

But I argue there are better free fps games out there that fill that role. I'm a big fan of Splitgate. There's also Fortnite and others similar titles that fill a role. But is OW2 a great game, I argue no. Because they took out a lot of what made it special.

Since the game is free and on Steam, its probably easier to just install the game and try it out. Maybe you'll have a great time or maybe a terrible time.

Blizzard did to Overwatch what it normally does to other established IPs.

The microtransactions really aren't a big deal unless you care about cosmetics. There's a paid battlepass and you can buy skins. Better for all the F2P players who never bought the game, but sucks for people who spent money on OW1.

They just released a long blog post explaining why they switched to 5v5. tl;dr: the main reason is queue times. Secondary reason is making tanks feel more impactful. Tertiary reason is you don't need to learn complicated tank synergies (144 combinations of tank v tank versus 17424 combinations of 2 tanks v 2 tanks). Finally, performance issues, especially on consoles, were probably a big concern that they didn't directly mention.

If you want to go in and fuck around with your friends, it's fun. Not as fun as OW1, IMO, but still decent. If you want to be sweaty, I think probably find something better.
