I've never read it before nor have I watched any of the anime nor have I watched the Netflix live action show. Lots of friends tell me its great though.

Do you think I'll reach the end of the manga before I die?

I am an ENORMOUS One Piece fan who is completely caught up and here's what I have to say on this.

Read up through Arlong Park, which is 95 chapters in.

Arlong Park is where you should decide if you want to continue or not.

not only is the manga much better than the anime, it is a way faster read than watch unless you take 30 minuites to read a chapter, you could be done with it in a couple months reading it pretty casually (but honestly when its really good its hard to put down)
but I would say arlong park is a good litmus for if you are gonna fuck with OP or not but personally I think its good all the way through

Your biggest obstacle to finishing the manga in less than 6 months would probably be the cost of buying like 200 tankobon. If you're combing through every single background in each chapter it might take a while too but reading manga at even a casual pace is a lot faster than watching anime unless you're doing double speed and aggressively skipping over any recaps or down time.

the shonen jump app is really good btw its like 3 bucks a month or something, its what I read it on these days

I agree completely and IMO it gets better from there.

Except Long Ring Long Land but even that I don't think is as bad as people say it is.

it goes on for 900+ chapters too many.

seriously, the story still is not even close to wrapping up, and we're over 1100 chapters.

it's gone on for so long that they're already remaking the anime from scratch despite the anime still ongoing.

just avoid everything about this series, it's nothing but annoyance

There's definitely at least 100+ chapters left but in something that is currently 1121 chapters long I would call that "close" to wrapping up.

Wano went on for forever and its was still only 150 chapters. One Piece is in its final "saga" which probably means there will be more than one arc left but if there's more than 250 chapters or something then what would the point even be of announcing that? There will be tons of movies and probably spin-offs and shit to keep the gravy train rolling but the actual core story of One Piece will end in the next 5 years and from now to then will represent less than 20% of the total chapters of the manga.

If you like battle manga (db, Naruto, bleach, etc) you'll probably like one piece. I'd say it's more like dragon ball than the other series (goofy, funny, etc.). It is long, but honestly binging it/reading it at your own pace is better than waiting a week for it to come out. The week by week pacing can be a little painful if you're impatient. By that, I mean there are some weeks/chapters were nothing really gets resolved, but if you're binging the manga it really isn't a negative.

I say start reading it, but don't obsessively read it (unless you want to). The manga will be over soon enough so you can get caught up as the manga comes to an end.

While that is true, I'm starting to truly believe that the manga is starting to wrap up. The events that are happening right now are telling.

Is the fact that the author has explicitly said the manga is ending not the most telling thing? I'm sure people have different ideas of how soon that means exactly but I don't understand why there's multiple comments in this thread of people making jokes about the series going on forever or saying how their gut is telling them it will end soon when both are superseded by Oda just outright saying its on track to end in the next while.

Surprisingly, sorting through Google results of "one piece ending" is quite useless, but as far as I know he's never actually said anything about a final saga before. He's made comments like "I'd like the series to be under 100 volumes" or "I have ideas about how it could finish in a few years" but explicitly saying "This is the final saga" is new and obviously different than a vague timeline answer or joke about the number of volumes.

It's very clear that things are coming to a head in the current chapters

"final saga" is the key phrase, since it means multiple arcs and not just "final arc", so it's still going to be a while.

wano alone took 4 years to finish, for example.
