Every now and then captcha will make you identify images or something (BTW, bots are rapidly surpassing human capability in this regard) but for the most part it's literally just "click here to prove you're human" which just doesn't seem like it should work at all.

I think its more about monitoring the motion of your cursor and the time it takes to click the box than just the act of clicking it.

It tracks the cursor movements. The way a bot clicks on a box is different from the way humans do, our movements are more imprecise and erratic.

That always seemed odd to me; a script is judging whether our mouse click seems human enough but that means it knows what a human click acts like. So why cant a bot just replicate that?

It makes sense with captcha words and clicking on traffic signs, because only the website knows what it randomly generated and not a foreign bot. But theres only so many ways to check a box.
