so what happens if you pick something off the shelf at $2, then when you get to the register it's $3? isn't that kind of a scam that they could change it like that?
yeah if that happens then the price displayed to the customer was incorrect and the business just committed a crime, in Australia anyway. In America it would probably be celebrated just like how they can advertise incorrect prices and blame it on different taxes in different states or something

Walmart has been making the customer experience so much worse recently. Theyve shut down the self checkout lanes at the one by my house and they dont take Apple Pay. You have to use the app to do tap payment. Then Ive also heard that theyre going to bring the self checkouts back, but only for customers who buy a premium service.

I mean most customers make the experience worse for themselves all things considered. Like yeah no Apple or Tap to Pay. It like why would you in any situation solely rely on that when physical cards or cash exists?

This is easier because paper labels get torn/missing all the time.

It used to take me five hours to re-price JUST the cell phone section of Best Buy on Sunday mornings. We would come in at 6am and the store opened at 11am. Another person did Home Theater, another did Computing, another did Appliances, etc. So about 30-35 man-hours of labor each week JUST to change prices.

Then they started doing 2-day and 3-day sales and mid-week price adjustments, so it got to the point where people were changing prices every day.

And if you missed them, customers lost their shit.

Or, in the real world, the customer usually notices the price discrepancy, and the cashier sends them to customer service, where for the majority of businesses, the price that was listed on the shelf is respected (And the File Maintenance clerk is screamed at by upper management for having missed that one particular tag because the part-timer he asked to do that aisle instead threw all their tags into a bag and hid it behind a shelf and played on their phone for their shift. Ask me how I know this!).

What other reason, or ultimate goal do you think this has other than surge pricing, or price fluctuations that act similarly? They just really, really want to make sure that the prices they change maybe once a week at most don't take more than a few minutes to update the normal way?

It's far more than a few minutes "once a week at most."

This isn't an issue of if Wal-Mart is scummy enough to try "surge pricing." Because they certainly are. They already raise prices on seasonal items just to drop them before busy weeks so they can say "Look! We lowered the price!" and sucker people into thinking they got a deal. Every one is just dooming and glooming over an innocent change.

This is also misinformation. Most stores have an "express" selfcheckout that doesn't take cash because it's designed to use the Scan and Go feature that requires Walmart+. People are twisting it to say "Now you have pay to use self checkout!" when that isn't the case.

Plus Spark Drivers tend to use it too (for those that dont know Spark Drivers are like Walmart delivery drivers aka Uber Eats or other services)

It wouldn't make sense for them to update the prices randomly during the day. They should drop them between closing and opening.

They will absolutely update them during the day, thats the whole point of doing this. So that they can charge more during busy times. (Except theyll frame it as being lower prices during slow times.)

Has there been an actual example of this happening with electronic price tags? I've seen electronic price tags in my grocery stores and not once did I ever had surge pricing happen. I'm on a tight budget when I grocery shop so I'm fairly up to date with the pricing. From what I've seen from my vendors who are primarily brick and mortar stores that implemented this, it's meant as a long term plan to make updating pricing cheaper and faster with more accuracy as oppose to the older way of doing it. I can see why some people would be afraid of potential price surging, but honestly that sounds like a scammish type of thing to do that would get cracked down upon rather easily.

here what happens when the price scans as higher than listed is you get the thing free

provided you're paying enough attention to notice, at least. I think it's pretty hard if you do a big grocery trrip

Probably not but that requires basically a photographic memory or effort to care.
