A great basketball career cut short by foot/leg injuries, a great broadcasting career cut short by back issues, and a great life cut short by cancer. RIP, "throw it down big man!"

Walton and his predecessor Kareem Abdul-Jabbar were the faces of THE most legendary run of success in men's college sports, namely John Wooden's UCLA Bruins that won 7 straight NCAA National Championships from 1967-1973.

Walton didn't have the largely incomparable professional career that Abdul-Jabbar did, but when healthy, he still managed to snag a league MVP and was the focal point of one NBA championship team (the 1977 Portland Trailblazers) and contributed as a bench big for another one late in his career (1986 Boston Celtics).

Despite such legendary accolades, I'll always best remember him as one of the voices of "the NBA on NBC" in the 1990s when pro basketball took a massive leap into the national consciousness. His laid back persona and colorful, off-kilter quips provided a stark contrast to the passionate and matter of fact presentation of Steve "Snapper" Jones, creating my personal favorite basketball commentary pairing ever.

RIP to one of the biggest, coolest personalities the sport has ever known.

His career was devastated by injuries, so his prime was extremely short. He was one of four players to win collegiate player of the year 3 times. Champion+Finals MVP and runner-up for regular season MVP in his 3rd season, then won MVP the next year, then pretty much didn't play for a few years. Came back later and won 6th Man of the Year while helping one of the GOAT teams win the title.

He played like 3 uninjured seasons in his career. He got hurt in Portland, came back and won a title. Won MVP the next season, but got hurt before the playoffs. Then he sat out the next year because he protested how Portland treated injured players. He went to the San Diego/Los Angelee Clippers for 4 years and was hurt for the majority of each season. He signs with the Celtics, plays every game, wins Sixth Man of the Year and another championship. Then he gets hurt the next season and retires afterward.

Bill had a very unfortunate career.

Yeah, to date he is the only NBA player to have won League MVP, Finals MVP, and Sixth Man of the Year.

His career arc was highly unusual and quite frankly, probably wouldn't have happened in the modern NBA. His college injuries were a significant red flag and only worsened throughout his pro career, where he missed 3 entire seasons and significant parts of several more with foot and (later) back injuries.
