I'm going to earn my "not a poser" award for the NES. I believe the games you have to beat in order to qualify are:
Mario 1
Mario 2
Mario 3
Zelda 1
Zelda 2
Metroid
Mega Man 2
Final Fantasy
Castlevania
Ninja Gaiden
Kirby's Adventure
Contra
Punch-Out!

Of those, I've finished Mario 1, Mega Man 2 (as well as the other ones), and Metroid. I will be completing all of these on the 3DS virtual console if possible, and I will be using Restore Points. If you think anything is missing from this list, please tell me.

With that being said, I'm starting with Zelda 1. Wish me luck!

Zelda 2 is a lot. If you can get Crystalis thats fun. Its Zelda like with some light magic items. Its on NSO. I understand there are some bad ports.

Eh I would play Mega Man 3 too. Honestly, I would play all 6, as theyre all pretty good.

lol I grew up in the rent NES games era. I know of Bayou Billy but never played it. I also played Bionic Commando but cant remember if I beat it.

My mom like Dragon Spirit. Probably a go-to over Gun.Smoke, but if youre a Capcom guy then go for either one

I say Blaster Master. Not for any cred to not be a poser but just because it is probably my number one loved NES game of all time and I just think it is a superb game that should be enjoyed. Awesome music, awesome variation in the stages.

This game took up a large chunk of my life in 1988 at 12 years old. I was in junior high and this game along with Ninja Gaiden and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles dominated my life for about 18 months mastering them.

Sure I would sprinkle other games in there as well like the well known Mega Man games and many other titles but Blaster Master was soooooooooooo good. Such a top tier game.

I still periodically listen to the music on youtube. Something about the music from that era it remains some of my favorite sounds even though I know modern OST's are superior I just love that chiptune music and sound effects.

I've beaten all of the games on your list, except for Punch-Out!! and Contra. Other NES games I've beaten include Castlevania 2, Ninja Gaiden 2 and 3, Mega Man 1, 3, 4, and 5, Blaster Master, Ice Climber, Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Donkey Kong Jr. Math, Donkey Kong 3, Mario Bros., Urban Champion, Balloon Fight, Kid Icarus, Adventures of Lolo 1 and 2, Dragon Warrior, Yoshi, Yoshi's Cookie, and Wario's Woods.

So even though I'm missing two of the games from the list, I feel pretty assured in saying that I am not a poser. Also as a note for anyone wondering about how you beat some of those games that are just endless, I tend to go with whatever counts as experiencing essentially everything. So with Balloon Fight, for example, after phase 12, it just keeps repeating the layouts of phases 4-12 forever, so that's what I count as beating it.

I made it to the final boss, once. He had a sliver of health left when I got a game over after weeks of practice and I just couldn't take it anymore. I used the NES advantage and it makes he beat'm'up sections much more tolerable. I have a light gun for the shooting stages but then I realized the game penalizes you for using it and I died less often using the controller so I just gave up on using the light gun, even if it's more fun.

The driving stages still suck, though. It takes a lot of memorization and reflexes, similar to battle toads I guess. This game is on my bucket list to complete but It's going to be awhile before I get the motivation to try again.

Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden and Punch Out are really hard to beat. I've never done it without massive cheating and/or save spamming.

Of course, people said Zelda 2 was really hard too, and I didn't see what the fuss was about.

And Final Fantasy is a bit of a tedious slog.

The rest are decently balanced, and worthy of inclusion.

watching speedrun videos of the first three games you mentioned are absolutely wild

These games are hard enough just to finish and then people will do it as fast as humanly possible without dying

Gonna throw out a rec for Astyanax. I remember I it being challenging enough, but possible.

It was one of the earlier NES games I was able to get through.

Mario 1 - Beat
Mario 2 - Beat (Both)
Mario 3 - Beat
Zelda 1 - Beat
Zelda 2 - Final Temple, stopped
Metroid - Quit in last area because of jank shit that if you die, you need to go back to farm health because there's this one door you cannot walk through without a deadly orb killing you on screen shift.
Mega Man 2 - I think I beat it. Pretty sure.
Final Fantasy - I think I beat one area and quit. Boring.
Castlevania - Never touched the series
Ninja Gaiden - Never touched Gaiden on NES. I did Platinum Sigma 2 on PS3 though
Kirby's Adventure - Beat. Great game.
Contra - Beat Contra 3 on SNES. Never actually played the NES one.
Punch-Out! - Never tried. Never liked sports.

Ooh.. River City Ransom

Castlevania 3, Super Contra, and the Megaman sequels should be on the list too.

Ive beaten everything on your list except Ninja Gaiden. Made it to the last boss, but didnt beat it. I want to beat the game legit at some point.

Just a heads up that Ninja Gaiden is on a whole different level from everything else on your list. Its a classic and fondly remembered, but its also definitely one of the harder NES games out there.

All are solid games, though. Hope you have fun as you make your way through them!
