These have always bothered me. The old 90's style ones where you tear open a square to drink from were perfect, because what you're supposed to do with hot beverages is sip them.

If you're using a sippy cup lid, the hot beverage jets into your mouth at a rate of a trillion gallons per microsecond and you end up with fourth, fifth and eleventh degree burns.

I have a similar rant about those jet nozzle style ketchup and mustard bottles. It's 100% impossible to extract a reasonable amount because 5psi = none but 5.000001 psi = FLYYYYY ME TO THE MOOOOON

I'm not entirely sure how the physics works, but with a guess I'd say it's because they're not vented properly. The old style square ones were vented at the square. But since it's a sippy cup lid where you put your mouth over the whole opening, there's no air intake by which you can sip at the surface.

Just a guess.

Sippy cup style lids for hot beverages (different from sippy cup style lids for cold beverages) have a tiny little hole to manage flow on the opposite side of the cup. Often, this hole is poorly perforated and thus does not provide the airflow necessary for a smooth sip. Scratch off the excess plastic, or make the hole slightly bigger with a pen or similar tool to make using such a lid a better experience.

I guess this is what happened to me.
