The worst teams pick first. The bears have never had a good quarterback and they now get to ruin Caleb Williams the same way they ruin everyone. The Fever sucks and now all the Caitlyn Clark hype is going down the drain bc they keep getting blown out.

Sux for those top draft picks Knowing they're being expected to turn around a failing franchise.

So you think the Chiefs and Nuggets and Yankees and Bruins should get all the good players?

Professional sports, particularly in North America are all sorts of weird when you look at them from the perspective of being professions or actual jobs.

sometimes a great player going to a bad team is how they get the ball rolling

If the best teams always got the best players from the get go then it wouldnt even be fun to watch

Parity is the obvious goal of the draft but that doesn't change the fact that it screws over good players. Lots of first round busts would have probably succeeded if they went to competently run organizations and were allowed to develop properly. Patrick Mahomes going to the Bears would not be nearly the same as him getting to watch Alex Smith and have Andy Reid's coaching on the Chiefs.

The Bears were not the worst team last year, they got the pick because of an earlier trade with the Panthers and the Panthers ended up being the worst team last year.

Then give the #1 pick to the team with the best record who just missed the playoffs

Nah, but Da Bears still suck and are owned by the Packers through Aaron Rodgers, who handed the deed over to Jordan Love when he left for the Jets. >_>

I don't follow the WNBA, but from my understanding they barely even have a preseason and its always foolish to judge how good a player is during their first few games.

That said, being good in college doesn't always translate to being good in professional sports.

It's a weird system, but I suppose it makes a kind of sense in US sports with closed leagues.

Not a rule that would survive a second anywhere with leagues that have promotion/demotion of course.

How would those bad teams get better if you don't want to give them the best player in the draft? FAs won't want to sign there either

Only reason drafts exist is cause there's no promotion/relegation in north american sports and it's a closed circuit for owners.

Bad teams are more often the product of bad coaching/management than players. To get to the pros the athletes are already elite.

Eh, the only way they screw players is when they go to a shit market.

Imagine Giannis having to live in fucking Milwaukee. Or Aaron Rodgers living in Green Bay.

Anthony Edwards for instance would be the face of the league if he played in New York, LA, Atlanta, Chicago, or any other major city, instead he plays for Minneapolis, a city few give a shit about.

As for teams being shit for players, that can be said for any shit organization. Eventually they'll hire the right person for the right job. Baltimore went forever without a high quality QB and randomly lucked into a two time MVP. The 49ers had absolutely dreadful QB play for like 2 decades. Same for Buffalo. Now they both have QB's that could win them a championship.

Hell, before Mahomes, the Chiefs hadn't drafted a QB who won them a game since the early 80's.

The point is, parity allows for teams anywhere to be worth a shit, but while you can change the GM or Coach, you can rarely change the location.

A lot of incredible college athletes fizzle out and dont accomplish much in the pros, regardless of who theyre coached by

More teams making money and being competitive means more teams can pay for more players. Even in salary cap leagues. Profitable leagues help raise the cap.

It helps more players get paid more. The good and the marginal.

Or maybe put the first 5 picks up for bid? The teams can bid using their draft pick allotment for the year. You rank them the same way we do know worst to best, assign pick values like one of the draft pick trade charts

Then each team submits a one time secret bid for the top five picks using the value they want to give up and they lose those picks. So basically they're trading up for the pick. The top five bids get the top 5 picks in order of bet bid to worst. Then after the top 5 they go worst to best same as normal. The worst teams would still have the advantage, but at the cost of spending multiple picks to secure the best picks.

They can even televise the bid reveals and any ensuing tie breaker rebids.
