Attention Helldivers,

Due to technical issues at the launch of HELLDIVERS 2, we allowed the linking requirements for Steam accounts to a PlayStation Network account to be temporarily optional. That grace period will now expire. See details below in this post.

Account linking plays a critical role in protecting our players and upholding the values of safety and security provided on PlayStation and PlayStation Studios games. This is our main way to protect players from griefing and abuse by enabling the banning of players that engage in that type of behaviour. It also allows those players that have been banned the right to appeal.

As such, as of May 6th, all new HELLDIVERS 2 players on Steam will be required to connect their Steam account to a PlayStation Network account. Current players on Steam will start to see the mandatory login from May 30th and will be required to have linked a Steam and PlayStation Network account by June 4th. PlayStation Network accounts are free and easy to set up using this link

And what about the thousands and thousands of players across the world living in countries that don't have access to PSN? Like the Philippines, or various European and Middle Eastern countries, or the countries in Africa? Screw them, right

It's pretty normal for games to require another account, I'd bet the majority of people who are active on Steam also have a PSN account. If you don't, it takes a couple minutes to make one and then you're done.

Seriously, every company at this point is a data company first and a "whatever they're selling" company second. If that bothers you then it started a long time ago before PSN was a thing and you should flood the market with fake data.

I also don't think it's about the data. They pretty much have everything they need on you with your Steam account (probably worth more if you were forced to make one for the game). It's more likely a combination of wanting to boost their active account numbers and wanting to ban people easier. It can be annoying for developers to ban cheaters through Steam so much easier on them to force players to use a different account and ban you that way.

Seriously, "it's not hard" is not and will never be a valid defense of something shitty. It's also not hard for Sony to leave things as they are since it's been working for months, so why are you putting this on the players?

On a technicality. The store page says it is required; on launch day, maybe the day after too, it had a button to skip tying in your PSN. If you bought it any time after the launch day(s) you never got prompted and, unless you scrolled all the way down and read the store front, had no idea it needed it.
