Is it any good?

I like the SNES version more

dq didnt get great until dq3 imo. 1/2 arent worth playing today

dq is a short game made even shorter because the gbc port massively boosts the exp and gold you get from monsters. Its worth playing at least once, though it is very simple. Its the first of its kind after all

DQ2 is also easier on gbc but its a longer game thats tougher in general than 1. I like it but theres more of an investment

You definitely don't want to play the actual original version of 1. You really want to select stair from a menu just to go up and down stairs? It's a real slog.

Nah, I got both those games last year at my local used game swap shop. I played them back to back, DQ1 is just a grind fest but maybe worth playing for the history. DQ2 is amazing for how improved it is. Once you get the ship it basically turns into an open world RPG. It's properly hard, too, unlike the 1st game where you can just grind yourself up in levels and keep making progress.

The NES game is where it's at, you actually get encounters like this...You'll never see this in any of the remakes.

i mean of course it's good but the nes is better in almost every way

edit: dragon quest 1, 2, 3, 4 are fucking amazing and definitely hold up. DQ2 is one of the most underrated games of all time. also Ultima 1-4, dos versions except for the NES version of 3

DQ2 is the worst game in the mainline series by far

Dragon Warrior 3 on the GBC was my first standard JRPG experience. It's also why I don't like most JRPGs; most flat out don't hold up, or just retread old ground.

the first game is worth playing. never played the 2nd.

I played DWM at a friend's house, and the first ever online purchase I made was a copy of it.
Or so I thought, because I didn't realize Dragon Warrior was a series and I instead bought 1+2.

To answer the question, I'd say it's the definitive version of 1, but as one of the few fans of 2 in the world, I have a real soft spot for the NES version. The GBC version makes the final boss an actual challenge, buffing its HP and damage output along with my favorite version of its theme though.

Point being, yes, play this~

i honestly enjoyed them when i played it. i enjoyed 1 a lot and 2 was pretty good. i'd recommend it, but i was on a serious DQ kick at the time so maybe it was just good timing.

I got FF1 and DQ2 at about the same time for the NES. Took a long time to knock out DQ2.

I heard originaly that was meant to come out in the west but then Enix shut down their US office around the time Super Famicom DQ 1 and 2 came out

I only played the first game on the NES, but I really enjoyed it.

Not to derail. But U1 and 2 are real difficult. There is the food counter, healing is convoulted. If you fight any monster you will miss alot. Every fight is like this. It's Morrowind levels bad. 3 was when they finally got it right. The versions on nes of 3&4 are the best versions. The pc versions of 5-7 are the best ones. Don't play the rest

Yeah. Though resorted prologue aside, the mobile port of II brings the Zoom/Return spell in line with III and up so that you don't have to be mindful of where you save.
