One of the best turn based rpg of all time along with Infinite Wealth

Who are your favourite characters?

ichiban is my favourite protagonist of all time

Seonhee is great. Kiryu is amazing of course, but I am not that far in Kiryu's adventures

If you have not played it. I heavily recommend

7 is fine to start, but yes playing the Kiryu games and 7 should preferably be done before playing IW, but I still enjoyed IW while playing 0

7 is turn based

0 is action based.

Do you like story games? I recommend getting both. They both have amazing stories

For years I wanted a jrpg set in a modern city that felt like a real place, and LaD checked all the boxes right down to being able to go to restaurants and bars. I also liked how creative the enemies were, and how they were contextualized. After I played this game I spent the next several months playing every mainline Yakuza game and both Judgments. What a great series

0 is my personal recommendation for starting. It's a great sampling of the action, tone, melodrama, humor, and side content that the series is famous for. It requires no previous knowledge to engage in, as it's a prequel to the main storyline, so it exists quite self-contained.

I played through 0 for the first time a while back and enjoyed it, but it was a bit too much like playing a movie, and didn't really inspire me to play more of the games, but I do have them all. I'll get around to it eventually, I'm sure.

Technically speaking, I think Infinite Wealth is the better game, but 0 has a better story. I liked IW more for the characters interactions than the grand scheme

I think if someone prefer rpg like me, 7 is better since it made me want to see all past games. I just started Kiwami and I do believe I will appreciate the story

How are the judgements games? I am playing Kiwami and I consider maybe playing them as a break from Kiryu's adventures when I get in the middle

Fair enough. That's the only Yakuza game I haven't played yet so I suppose it can potentially be better.

That said, I value story-based RPGs for their writing so if 0 has a better story then I suspect that my feelings will not change.

I've finished both Like a Dragon and Infinite Wealth, and unfortunately, I didn't enjoy either one.

IW is probably the last Yakuza that I'll play...outside of the ones I already own and haven't played yet (Kiwami, Kiwami 2 - I did play the originals - Y6, Judgment, & Lost Judgment).

I know a bit about the Kiryu line of games (played 0, watched streams of Kiwami 1 and 2), but I think IW did a good job of giving enough background that you can still feel the gut punch moments for Kiryu's side without having gone too deep. Obviously don't have the full story and attachment that folks would have after playing the full series.

I felt like they didn't respect your time.

you could have either cinematics, waves of combat, or both, before you could save.

you could also be playing for hours and then be thrown into yet another tutorial, and you'd have to stick with that for a while (sujimon, Dondoko Island, etc.).

I liked the characters, but I didn't really care for the main stories.

also, it was lame how you'd have to grind sometimes. like, the game would encourage it.

I'd probably give LaD 6.5-7/10 and IW a 6/10.

agreed.

I don't want to make it seem like LaD and IW are the only Yakuzas I have issues with because of that.

I think I preferred the first two games just because they were a bit light on it (I can't really remember since it's been a long while).

Judgment games are good! They're a nice break from yakuza drama and more detective stories. It's a weird vibe being a normal law-abiding person.

they play like tighter dragon engine kiryu games

the MC has his own unique styles. i would say Lost Judgment has some of the best combat in video games as a medium

theres also some annoying detective mechanics that get toned down or tightened up in the sequel

They're both top tier Yakuza games, and the amount of side content in Lost Judgment is crazy even for this series

I think Lost Judgment might be the only one in the franchise to have a full blown expansion with the Kaito Files, but I could be wrong.

You're correct on that one. Kaito Files is the only multi-chapter DLC story content they've ever released and it's some of the best short-form writing they've ever done.

So yeah to answer the previous question, the Judgment series is action combat like the earlier LAD games combined with detective-style minigames, things like chasing, tailing, lock-picking, eavesdropping, and in LJ you add things like parkouring and infiltrating. Some of the minigames hit and some of them don't. For the most part, they do tend to overstay their welcome, but are not so bad as to ruin the experience.

That's basically a function of it being some of their latest in action combat, particularly when it comes to the Dragon Engine. Yakuza 6 and Kiwami 2 were rough on action combat, and then it seems they kinda "got it" when they moved on to Judgment, then Lost Judgment, then Like a Dragon Gaiden which is also fun and awesome.
