I think they're very good, but not superb like the Mega Drive Sonics.

The game gear Sonic games were great except for the one massive flaw that was having the boss stage be its own thing with no rings. As a kid some of those later bosses felt impossible.

Also, maybe it's just nostalgia but I kind of wish they brought the hang glider sections back in some form in the later games.
