Oh I didn't see that. Yikes.

Even still, it's a great recording of LUE history and an internet time capsule.

None. You either have to have signed up for access almost two decades ago, or be a mod.

I read through the stuff there when I was a mod. Tbh there's really nothing to see, anymore.
...shit, are politics banned there, too? I mean, I doubt anyone there will mark it, but damn. I hadn't even considered that technically LUE has to follow the same politics and hornyposting rule changes

Yeah, the overwhelming majority of topics there are about games, food, kids, and an obligatory fitness and depression topic, respectively. I don't know if they still do the "Average Trump Supporter" image series topic or not.

All the users who did stupid stuff back in the day are either banned now (on LL's successor) or grew up a lot.

The modern community is nothing like it was in 2004.

Keep in mind that most of the crazy trolling and offensive-ness was something done nearly 20 years ago by now. Most of the users on LUE are just 30-somethings at the youngest, socializing on the internet. You'll get worse stuff on an average subreddit. The users on LUE or LUE-adjacent communities aren't random trolls anymore, for the most part. They got a bad rep for the legitimately dumb and borderline-dangerous stuff they did two decades ago but that's literally all in the past.

I missed the LUE sign up, but I had posted on it a bit before it closed. Seeing as they did board invasions into popular game boards really often it was hard to be unaware of the board. Most of the shenanigans were annoying at that point and didn't really intrigue me.

It has been an interesting transition from trolling teenagers to topics on girls in college to people getting married to having kids and buying houses over the years. And the inevitable death announcement here and there.

I find it really, really difficult to describe what the internet was like 20 years ago. It really was the wild wild friggin' west. Before the internet was a mainstream thing, you had pockets of users on BBSes and forums who slowly taught incoming newcomers, usually around the start of college in the fall. After AOL and multimedia PCs took off in the mid-1990s, it really did seem like everyone was using the internet, even if only a small percentage of people were. We didn't get to what we consider the modern day internet until the launch of modern smartphones, with the first iPhone and the first Android devices. That was a game changer because you could access the actual internet - no mobile pages with hampered features, no subsites but not the full ones... Then it just snowballed.

Back in the early 2000s, it was definitely simpler, but so were we - most users were probably at least teenagers, you barely saw anyone over 21, and if you did it was a very, very rare occurrence. Tell a bunch of teenagers to stop doing something and they're going to do it just to make you angry or offended, and that's what a lot of the users did back then. Thankfully, most of us grew up. It's fun to reminisce, but I like having an actual account to continue posting with.

Oh, I just realized that I've been using some of the terms incorrectly. ExcLUEsion was not the privatization of LUE after the Live Journal invasion-- it was the signup.

So the terminology is like this:
Black LUEsday: A user in a Truth or Dare topic dares LUEsers to invade the Pokemon board. Tealmarie creates a topic asking why Pikachu is yellow, and is suspended shortly thereafter. LUEsers blow a gasket and start invading the Pokemon board for real, in addition to committing around 25 LUEicides. Tealmarie's account is later restored, but CJayC implements a minimum user requirement on LUE -- the first in Gamefaqs history -- to curb the board invasions and LUEicides.
SteriLUEzation: LUE is privatized to accounts below a certain UserID # after LUEsers invaded the memorial Live Journal of a 15yo suicide victim, filling it with abusive and highly inappropriate content
ExcLUEsion: Ceej created a 2-week, unannounced signup period during which Gamefaqs users could sign up to retain their access to LUE. Needless to say, a lot of people missed the opportunity.

Another note: Though this is not LUE-specific, there was a point when reformat//:C or whatever the command line is was a banned word. Yeah, you heard me. (Man, remember when computers had far less idiot-proofing?)

Lol. I remember a post on 4chan where apparently some guy did that to his dad's work computer.

Debatable.

261 hit the block largely for the same reasons, ultimately. CE not only has politics but is also dangerous,
whereas 261 was not a danger to the community.

LMAO.

"On December the 30th, news leaked of a new TOS which would basically put LUE out of comission permanently, with a strict anti-offensive posting rule. These rules will be implemented on January the 5th.."

Well, I guess that news wasn't wrong, it just took them a bit longer than intended to implement it, a minor delay of 20 years or so XD

When I was a member the database got nuked when megaupload went down and mediafire died/had its ToS updated. I imagine they probably rehosted everything in the decade+ since, but I haven't been back since.
